Electrical Design Engineer
My client is seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Design Engineer with proven experience in large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), utility-scale Solar PV plants, and grid connection infrastructure. The successful candidate will lead the electrical design function across the full project lifecycle—concept, feasibility, detailed design, construction support, and commissioning—ensuring compliance with industry standards, client requirements, and grid operator specifications.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the electrical design of large-scale renewable energy projects, including BESS, Solar PV, substations, and grid connections (up to 132 kV and beyond).
* Produce and review single line diagrams, protection and control schematics, cable sizing, grounding/earthing designs, and layouts.
* Develop specifications, design reports, and technical documentation in line with project and regulatory requirements.
* Coordinate with grid operators (DNOs/TSOs) to secure grid connection agreements, ensuring compliance with G99, ENA standards, IEC/IEEE codes, and utility requirements.
* Carry out load flow, fault level, harmonic, and protection coordination studies using industry-standard software (e.g., DIgSILENT, ETAP, PSCAD).
* Provide technical support during procurement, construction, FAT, SAT, and commissioning phases.
* Review vendor/subcontractor designs and ensure alignment with project requirements.
* Act as the technical authority for electrical design within the project team, supporting project managers, civil engineers, and EPC partners.
Qualifications & Experience
* Degree in Electrical Engineering (Chartered Engineer status or working towards it preferred).
* Minimum 7+ years’ experience in electrical engineering, with a focus on renewable energy and grid-connected power systems.
* Proven track record of delivering designs for:
* Battery Energy Storage Systems (≥50 MW)
* Utility-scale Solar PV (≥50 MW)
* HV/MV substations and grid connections (11 kV – 132 kV)
* Strong knowledge of UK/EU grid codes, G99, IEC, IEEE, and ENA standards.
* Proficiency in electrical design and analysis software (e.g., DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, AutoCAD, Revit, or similar).
* Experience with protection & control systems, SCADA, and grid integration.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills—comfortable engaging with clients, DNOs/TSOs, EPCs, and regulators.
* Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound engineering judgments under pressure.
Desirable Skills
* Experience with large scale hybrid projects (PV + BESS + wind).
* Experience with grid design practises
* Familiarity with H&S/CDM regulations and construction site practices.
