Main duties of the job
As a Payroll and Pension Advisor, you will support the delivery of the monthly and weekly payroll and pensions service to the Trust and its subsidiary company, CDD Services. The role involves maintaining employee assignments for pay-related changes, interpretation and application of terms and conditions, and industry regulations related to pay and pensions. You will be involved in the completion of payroll processing and submission of statutory information. The postholder will also supervise and train other team members.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield, and Weardale, as well as over 80 other community-based settings and in patients' homes.

From April 9th, 2025 - Healthcare assistants - You must have a minimum of two years of experience working within the NHS as a HCA for the Trust to consider sponsorship (we will only consider sponsorship if you meet this criteria and have a current visa expiring within 3 months).
Job responsibilities
Interpret and apply information from NHS Employers, HMRC, and NHS Pensions whilst adhering to Trust policy and procedures.
Authorize calculations for Pension Benefits.
Process statutory and non-statutory deductions as required by local and national demands.
Process documentation for pay-related changes and events.
Perform required processing and calculations for employee absence.
Responsible for ensuring overpayments are calculated and recovery arrangements implemented.
Check and verify accuracy of payroll output in line with department procedures. Ensure that monthly payroll reports are checked and errors investigated.
Run processes pertaining to production of ESR weekly payroll.
Support with monthly ESR payroll processing.
Authorize and balance calculations for interim payments and recovery in ESR.
Identify returned BACS and process redirections.
Responsible for the day-to-day supervision of Payroll and Pension Administrators and Assistants, including training, appraisals, and return-to-work absence interviews.
Person Specification
Experience
* Previous experience working in a Payroll and Pension service.
* Worked within a busy team facing competing demands and pressures.
* IT Literacy, including Microsoft Office and industry-recognized Payroll software.
* Delivering high-standard Customer Care.
* Worked to strict processing deadlines.
* Experience of working in NHS payroll or pensions or financial services sector.
* Using ESR to process payroll.
Special Skills & Knowledge
* Excellent knowledge of payroll procedures, legislation, and statutory requirements.
* Knowledge of pension auto-enrollment and occupational pension schemes.
* Good organizational skills for speed and accuracy.
* Experience interpreting various Terms and Conditions and policies related to pay.
* Working knowledge of industry-recognized Payroll software.
* Self-motivated, agile, and problem-solving skills.
* Good communication skills and ability to constructively challenge.
* Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information effectively.
* Recognize when to seek support from the Payroll Team Leader.
* Adaptability to change and delivering change initiatives.
* Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.

* Experience operating NHS payroll processing.
* Experience processing NHS or other public sector pension schemes.

Special Requirements
* Able to travel across Trust sites.
* Deliver training and participate in awareness sessions on payroll or pension matters.
Qualifications
* NVQ Level 4 in Payroll/Pension or equivalent experience.
* Minimum 5 GCSEs including Maths and English or equivalent.
* Recognized IT Qualification or equivalent experience.
* AAT or other financial services training.
