Overview

Job Title: Deputy Head Teacher

Reports to: Head of Operations

Contract Type: Full time, permanent

Location: Coggeshall

Salary: £47,500 - £55,000


Main Purpose of the Role

The Deputy Headteacher will lead and promote an educational vision which is consistent with the White Trees Group strategic direction in line with the Building Brighter Futures Framework. They will maintain and support the development of the conditions which enable pupils and teachers to achieve effective learning, so that the school's aims and objectives are implemented in accordance with the policies of the governing body and organisational vision. They will provide effective leadership and management to secure, sustain and promote the reputation and daily operation of the school site, ensuring the delivery of high quality holistic education and a nurturing learning environment. The Deputy Headteacher is accountable to the Headteacher and the Executive Headteacher. Together with the Senior Leadership Team, they are responsible for evaluating the school's performance to support continuous improvement, raising standards, ensuring equality of opportunity, monitoring policies and practices, and ensuring resources are used efficiently to achieve the school and organisation aims and objectives and for the day-to-day management of the school site. They lead their staff in providing a needs-led, person-centred service for children and young people, fostering self-awareness and reflection and giving pupils a strong voice in decisions about their education. The Deputy Headteacher spends time learning about and understanding their role; continuity through rigorous planning, therapeutic interventions and a team approach is viewed as essential to brighter futures for all of our young people.


Duties And Responsibilities


Leadership and Management

* Provide leadership & management to all staff, delivering the highest possible quality of care within a safe working and living environment.
* Be a positive and effective role model, approachable, with regular presence at the school site, and consistent in actions and decisions.
* Take an active role as the Deputy Head and ensure the Schools Appraisal and supervision schedules are undertaken
* Support the creation and implementation of the SEF and School Improvement Plan (SIP), and take sole responsibility for appropriately delegated aspects of it
* Ensure the team makes good progress towards SIP areas identified in appraisal meetings
* Effectively support and challenge all staff in achieving the school's priorities and targets
* Keep parents/carers/professionals informed about the curriculum, targets, pupils' attainment/progress, and their role in improvement
* Develop staff to use their skills effectively and ensure all staff understand their roles and responsibilities
* Manage the school site effectively
* Maintain a highly visible presence to support a positive school ethos and behaviour
* Maintain high expectations of behaviour and use the behaviour wave system to support pupils
* Lead by example to model expected behaviour and manners
* Maintain good relationships with pupils, exercise appropriate authority, and act decisively when needed
* Lead teams of adults and their morale management
* Support the vision, ethos and policies of the school and promote high levels of achievement
* Ensure staff read key information on pupils and that information is updated dynamically (RA, one-page profiles, Destination Learning Journeys, Contacts sheets, and other documents)
* Prepare new pupil information before they start their White Trees journey
* Set up logistics/timetable before staff/pupils return after holidays and communicate with relevant parents/carers
* Adapt timetable to cover sickness and absence promptly while maintaining consistency
* Conduct daily handovers and debriefs with the team
* Attend required meetings


Safeguarding Responsibilities

* Designated safeguarding lead
* Ensure pupils are safe and risk assessments are updated per policies
* Identify and rectify gaps in risk operations systems and policies
* Prioritise safeguarding of pupils and staff in all documentation
* Oversee safeguarding and follow reporting systems to the highest level
* Ensure systems and policies align with regulatory standards
* Ensure day-to-day operations meet current education standards
* Maintain health and safety standards and robust, easy-to-follow systems


Set High Expectations

* Establish a safe and stimulating environment with mutual respect
* Set goals that stretch and challenge all pupils
* Demonstrate positive attitudes and behaviour expected of pupils
* Maintain a learning environment that promotes a calm and secure learning space and health & safety


Progress and Outcomes

* Drive planning and monitor attainment, progress and outcomes
* Be aware of pupils' capabilities and prior knowledge to tailor planning
* Ensure timely reporting and recording of attainment and progress within deadlines
* Meet assessment deadlines for academic and social-emotional aspects
* Adapt risk assessments when combining pupils
* Promote literacy, articulacy and standard English across subjects


Adapt Teaching Environment

* Develop effective relationships with pupils to assess needs dynamically


Professional Development and Appraisal

* Attend all CPD days and training
* Review personal development needs
* Participate in performance appraisal and improve practice
* Act on feedback and be open to coaching


Fulfil Wider Professional Responsibilities

* Contribute to school life and ethos
* Develop professional relationships with colleagues
* Drive teaching improvement through professional development
* Communicate with parents about pupils' achievements and well-being
* Celebrate pupil success and contribute to school communications
* Use school systems efficiently (class-dojo, Cpoms, E4L)
* Update Designated Teacher and SENCO on pupils for PEPs and annual reviews
* Ensure team follows all school policies and systems


Other Responsibilities

* Complete Designated Safeguarding Lead Level 3 training and act as DSL for the site
* Foster good relationships with parents/carers and the wider community
* Commit to personal professional development
* Ensure school vehicles are well maintained and managed
* Carry out other duties as reasonably assigned
* Recognise duties may vary without changing overall responsibility
* Ensure Keeping In Touch days are conducted by your team each half term


Person Specification


Qualifications

* A good undergraduate degree
* QTS


Experience

* Minimum 10 years teaching experience with demonstrated excellence
* Experience in a leadership role
* Extensive experience with SEMH/SEND pupils
* Experience of being a DSL
