LOCATION: Office base is Newcastle
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £35,000 - £45,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Note: This is a broadcasting roles description for a Senior Technical Operator within BBC Nations Operations based in Newcastle until February 2026.
Purpose of the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Technical Operator to join the BBC Nations Operations team based in Newcastle until February 2026.
The ops team works alongside editorial colleagues in Regional TV, Local Radio and Online. We collaborate to produce engaging content and strong local journalism with high operational, craft and production standards for brands such as BBC Look North, BBC Radio Tees, BBC Radio Cumbria and BBC Radio Newcastle.

We’re looking for someone who is self-disciplined and can plan ahead but also able to deal with ever changing circumstances and make quick decisions. You’ll need to be alert and confident in live news scenarios, an excellent communicator and be able to develop an understanding of operational equipment and ways of working. You’ll have an interest in our content and services and recognise the importance of being able to adapt in line with changing audience behaviour.
Your key responsibilities and impact
* Shoot edit crew – using news camera equipment you will be gathering for news stories and editing in the field. You will work alongside editorial colleagues to serve our audience with the best news coverage possible.
* News editing – based in the newsroom you will take footage shot by other crews and bring together the full story for broadcast on TV and for use online. A creative eye is required to create the best quality packages.
* Gallery skills – as part of a busy news programme you will work in the studio and technical galleries to get our live programmes to air. Operation of lighting equipment, automated systems and studio cameras will be needed to complete this part of your duties.
Your skills and experience
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
* Location / News camera operations – gathering footage for use across various outlets
* Editing of news packages – working to tight deadlines you will produce content for use on local programmes
* Media Management – ingesting footage and managing content for TV, online and radio outlets
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
* Graphic design skills – using state of the art software to create news content for TV and Online outlets
* News bulletin directing – using an automated gallery system to direct bulletins for TV
* Technical Management – lighting and camera control for a live studio environment
