Job overview

The Royal London Hospital Endoscopy Centre, St Bartholomew’s Bronchoscopy Centre and Mile End Early Diagnosis Centre are looking for Band 3 senior nursing assistants / decontamination staff, to join the existing team as we expand our services.

The main hub at RLH runs a six-day service from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 08:00 - 18:00hrs.

We are looking for people with commitment to Endoscopy and Gastroenterology. You should have excellent communication skills and be able to work as part of a large team. You should be flexible and approachable with a positive attitude, as this is the ethos of the unit.

The department opened in 2011 and is a purpose-built centre with 4 endoscopy rooms and a dedicated x-ray room, along with a 17 bedded recovery area with step down facilities. We also have a dedicated team of nurses who practise team nursing and rotate to all areas of the department.

The decontamination unit sits within the endoscopy unit; with a satellite unit at Bart’s hospital, which all staff will rotate to, once trained and occasion cross-site cover to Mile End early Diagnosis Centre too.

We undertake all Endoscopy procedures including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, EUS, EBUS, Spy Glass, ESD, bronchoscopy and capsule endoscopy. The unit processes all the flexible endoscopes for the Royal London Site.

We have an active clinical governance group which has been running for over 10 years and which you would be expected to attend and contribute.


Main duties of the job

Assist the registered nurse to provide nursing care for endoscopy patients.

Demonstrate the department / directorate philosophy of care.

Work under the supervision of the registered nurse with continuing responsibility for the department which will include the procedure rooms, recovery and admission area

Work as part of the endoscopy Team.

To work as part of the decontamination team on a rotational basis; working on the clean and dirty side of the RLH and at St Barts.

Person specification


Qualifications

* General Education to include English (written and oral) and basic Maths
* NVQ Level 3 or equivalent
* GCSE (2 grades A-C) or equivalent.


Experience

* Work experience to include dealing with people on a regular basis
* Experience in a caring role
* Experience of caring for patients.
* Experience in caring for patient’s relatives, family members and public.


Knowledge

* Expert knowledge of dealing with broken equipment and liaising with clinical engineering/ companies to facilitate minimal down time.
* Expert knowledge of cold disinfection/decontamination of endoscopic equipment.
* Expert knowledge of different types of endoscopes and equipment
* Expert knowledge of Automated Endoscope reprocessors
