The University of London

The School of Advanced Study (SAS) comprises eight internationally renowned research institutes as well as centres in Digital Humanities and Public Engagement. It has four nationally and internationally recognised specialist research libraries. An important component of the humanities national infrastructure and part of the University of London, this is a really exciting time to join the School of Advanced Study as we are at the start of a new strategic plan.

The Digital Humanities Research Hub (DHRH) at SAS supports a variety of digital approaches to the Humanities across the UK and beyond. The Hub comprises a core team of researchers with connections to specific disciplines, including Classics, English, History and Modern Languages, who support and collaborate with projects and initiatives, offer training and teaching in digital methods and approaches, and carry out interdisciplinary research and supervision. The DHRH currently hosts the UK-Ireland Digital Humanities Association.

The Role

The School of Advanced Study, University of London, is a partner in a major international research project: “Project StoryMachine: exploring implications of recommender based spatial hypertext systems for folklore and the humanities”. StoryMachine is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council in the UK and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in Germany (see https://storymachine.iisys.de/). It aims to preserve, explore and provide greater access to folklore traditions in Germany and the UK, through the development of a novel digital infrastructure. Folklore is a crucial element in identity construction and cultural understanding, but it faces archival and cultural challenges. The research will generate new insights into the relationships between folklore and identity construction by investigating key differences and commonalities in storytelling among participants from different geographic regions, cultural backgrounds and age groups.

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) who will help to deliver the project’s academic, community-facing and public engagement activities, including focus groups and workshops. They will also be responsible for managing social media and other digital communications and contributing to other project work packages.

This role is a 24-month FTC, working 17.5 hours per week.
