Job Overview

Please note that we will only accept applications from staff currently employed by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. This post is secondment for 9 months due to funding. If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post.

We have an exciting secondment opportunity within the Estates & Facilities Division and as such we are looking to appoint a highly motivated and conscientious individual to work as the Catering team lead for YYF.

The postholder will support the Facilities Management team to deliver a safe, high quality, cost-effective and efficient service consistently for patients, staff and visitors within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

The Catering Team Leader is responsible for the effective day to day safe operation of the food production/delivery & staffing (catering & retail) within the kitchens and restaurants for specific hospital sites.

They will provide professional guidance and lead a team of chefs and facilities operatives within the catering service.

The post holder will be expected to work over a 7 day rota and the base will change to give exposure to different sites and work experience.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible, where required, to carry out risk assessments and safe systems of work, adhering to Food Safety Law, Policies & Procedures, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) and National Standards for Cleaning in NHS Wales.

They must demonstrate a sound baseline of professional skill preferably gained from working in one or more of the Facilities functions, ideally at a supervisory level and he/she must evidence a contributing towards the efficient delivery of services, together with some experience of staff and financial management.

The individuals should have working knowledge of Health Board systems (ESR, E-rostering & Oracle) and must be IT literate with the ability to collect and collate information to product reports.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications And Knowledge

* Experience in various cooking techniques, including conventional and cook freeze catering models, stock management, food safety management and special dietary requirements of patients and/or customers in line with NHS Food and Hydration standards to diploma level equivalent
* A relevant cookery qualification Level 2 or equivalent as well extensive experience working in a large-scale catering operation with extensive experience managing a catering team within a large-scale catering environment.
* Level 3 Food Safety qualification.
* Allergen Management qualification.
* ILM Level 3 Management or equivalent qualification.


Desirable criteria

* NVQ Level 3 Professional Cookery
* Level 4 Food Safety Certificate
* Level 3 HACCP for Catering Certificate
* Certificate in Health and Safety e.g. IOSH
* Manual Handling Certificate


Experience

Essential criteria

* Proven experience in large-scale catering operation as a chef, preferably in a hospital or care setting with the ability to meet deadlines.
* Detailed knowledge of Food safety Legislation, HACCP principles, Allergen Management and COSHH.
* Strong leadership abilities, capacity to work under pressure, effective communication skills, and capability to lead a team and organise workloads.


Desirable criteria

* Previous experience working in a hospital catering setting
* Day to day supervision of a catering team with multiple members, including team meetings.
* Knowledge of special dietary needs including gluten free, low fat, halal, vegan and vegetarian

Essential criteria

* Effective interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written and electronically)
* Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams including managers and supervisors.
* Strong multitasking and organisational skills to deliver a quality food service within time constraints to patients, staff and visitors
* Capability to instruct and manage a team, motivating staff to maintain the service and training compliance as well as inducting and mentoring staff.
* Ability to prioritise workload and manage time effectively, working within time limits and under pressure.
* Excellent attention to detail to ensure HACCP policies and procedures as well as standard recipes are implemented as necessary.
* Proficient IT skills to include Microsoft Office.
* Self-motivated with a willingness to respond to unexpected changes and adopt a flexible approach.
* Commitment to personal development
* Ability to deal with staff and customers sensitively and diplomatically acting in a polite and respectful manner.
* Awareness of security and confidentiality.
* Ability to travel between sites

Desirable criteria

* Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh
