Environmental Health & Safety Specialist
The UL Solutions Safety & Sustainability Team in the UK & Ireland is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist to support site leadership and safety officers across our two main laboratories in Basingstoke and Telford, as well as other office locations across the UK and Ireland. The successful candidate will be part of a small EHS team serving the company’s needs in the Europe region as well.
The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist role is critical in establishing and promoting safe and healthy working conditions for all employees, contributing to UL Solutions’ mission of making the world a safer, more secure and sustainable place.
Responsibilities
* Under general supervision of the Regional EHS Manager, Europe, responsible for supporting site leadership and establishing safe and healthy working conditions for all employees
* Investigate conditions that may affect employee health and comfort
* Under general supervision, develop documents and maintain EHS programs (e.g., hazardous materials, emergency response plans) in compliance with Federal, State and Local legislation
* Assist in conducting inspections and reporting on tests and investigations to obtain data for determining sources of pollution and controlling pollutants
* Assist in analysing, interpreting and validating information on hazardous materials/chemicals and exposure monitoring results
* Assist in creating training programs and instructing employees in occupational health, accident prevention, safe operation of equipment and proper handling/cleanup of chemicals and hazardous materials
* Ensure all employees are trained in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators, safety glasses and safety shoes
* Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and all physical and digital security practices
* Use computers and office equipment frequently
This is an onsite role in Basingstoke, 5 days per week. Availability to travel across Europe (around 20%) is required.
Qualifications
* Around 2–4 years of directly related environmental & health and safety experience, or NEBOSH qualifications with 5–7 years+ of directly related experience
* University Degree (preferred: Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety & Health, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Chemical/Environmental/Mechanical Engineering)
* Fluent English (written and spoken); French or Dutch an added advantage
* Some knowledge of UK and EU Safety Directives and regulations (will be supported)
* Experience in risk assessments and/or chemical environment
* Experience working with stakeholders at all levels
* Great communication skills, ability to build strong relationships and trust
* Problem‑solving skills and understanding of different viewpoints
* People person with a strong focus on cooperation
* Preferably located in Basingstoke or within commuting distance
Physical Demands
* Ability to stand and walk extensively for up to two-hour periods, several times a day
* Ability to move safely over uneven terrain and ascend/descend stairs, ladders, scaffolding
* Ability to lift up to 30 lbs (assisted or unassisted), push, pull, bend, reach, handle, stoop; ability to work in tight spaces and in hot/cold environments occasional lab, office and outdoor settings
* Ability to recognize emergency situations and respond quickly
* Ability to wear a respirator and other PPE when required during some duties
