Head of Year Job Description (Maternity Cover – 1‑year Fixed Term)
Title: Head of Year – Maternity Cover – Fixed Term
Project Team: Teaching Staff
Reports to: Assistant Head / Deputy Head Teacher
Grade: Pay Scale M1-UP3 (£32,916 – £51,048 + TLR1b (£12,521)
Hours: 32.5 Hours (full‑time), 52 weeks per year with occasional out‑of‑hours work
Location: Q3 Academy Langley
Key Responsibilities
* Lead a year team of form tutors and associate staff, taking overall responsibility for the organisation, welfare and discipline of the year group.
* Identify students who require guidance and support, and oversee their academic progress and achievement.
* Maintain ownership of the year group, acting as a ‘mini‑school’ within its designated area of the school.
* Ensure outstanding attendance is promoted by rigorous scrutiny of registers and collaboration with the Attendance Officer, attendance champion, and external agencies.
* Attend and support assemblies, address students in a suitable style, counsel them on behaviour, and manage transitions.
* Support assessment and monitoring procedures, including Parent Consultation Evenings and scheduling of relevant events.
* Maintain up‑to‑date records in Bromcom/ Class Charts, handle investigations into serious misbehaviour, and coordinate reintegration meetings post‑suspension.
* Serve as the primary liaison with parents/carers, maintaining flexible and appropriate communication and arranging meetings as required.
* Participate in whole school discipline initiatives, including detentions, break/lunch supervision, and overall school order at all times.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
* Attendance – target of 96% daily, meeting national FFT benchmarks.
* Academic targets in line with school improvement priorities.
* Punctuality to school & lessons – metrics to be agreed upon acceptance of role.
* Correct uniform or business dress compliance.
* Hosting of Family Breakfast and Lunch on a regular basis weekly.

Person Specification
Qualification Criteria:
* Qualified to degree level or above.
* Possesses QTS status or equivalent.
Experience:
* Evidence of successful practice as a teacher in a secondary school.
* Experience of continually improving teaching practice to increase student achievement and progress.
* Evidence of improving the teaching and learning of a subject through schemes of learning and extra‑curricular/enrichment activities.
Knowledge:
* Up‑to‑date knowledge in the curriculum area (including A Level/GCSE specifications).
* Understanding of teaching strategies needed to set high aspirations for results and behaviour.
* Knowledge of current legal requirements, national and school policies and safeguarding procedures.
Leadership:
* Ability to lead by example.
* Effective team worker and leader with high expectations for accountability and consistency.
* Motivation to continually improve standards and inspire excellence.
* Commitment to safeguarding and welfare of all students.
Teaching and Learning:
* Effective and adaptable ICT skills.
* Strong data analysis and planning skills.
