Overview
Consultant CAMHS High Intensity Unit (PICU) opportunity within our Children and Young People’s Inpatient Services, with the development and opening of an 8 bedded CAMHS High Intensity Environment/PICU providing high quality care and treatment for patients with physical, social, psychological and emotional health needs. The closing date is 12 October 2025, with the unit opening early 2026.
Responsibilities
As a Consultant, clinical duties on the inpatient unit revolve around assessment and treatment planning for patients with complex presentations. Activities include direct face to face time, meeting families and community staff, reviewing records, clinical report writing and tribunal work, daily meetings with ward staff and CPA and discharge planning meetings. This is a full-time post at Alumhurst Road in Westbourne. You will work alongside another Consultant Psychiatrist and either continue working in the General Adolescent Unit or move across to work in the new CAMHS PICU when it opens. You will work closely with Community CAMHS colleagues to support the mental health and emotional wellbeing of young people across Dorset.
Remuneration and Benefits
We offer a recruitment and retention payment of £10,000 to be paid in monthly instalments for the first year of employment, plus a relocation package of up to £10,000 if relocating to Dorset. In addition, we offer a commitment to flexible working, career development opportunities and our NHS benefits. The post also attracts 10 days per year of study leave and an annual study leave budget of up to £1,000.
Duties and Professional Requirements
* Maintain Section 12 (2) and be an Approved Clinician.
* Be in possession or within 6 months of possession of a CCT in Psychiatry or on Specialist Register in Psychiatry.
* On Specialist Register in the relevant field Psychiatry.
* Experience of medicine outside psychiatry (e.g., general practice, medicine).
* Excellent knowledge in the specialty and ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
* Ability to make decisions based on evidence and experience, including contribution of others.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills; teaching experience.
Qualifications / Training
* General Medical Qualification (e.g., MBBS) and Licence to Practice.
* MRCPsych or recognised equivalent (e.g., membership of a psychiatry college in another country).
* Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
* Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician approval or ability to obtain before starting post.
* On Specialist Register in Psychiatry.
Clinical Governance, Leadership & Supervision
* Understanding of Clinical Governance in NHS organisations and its importance to patient care.
* Ability to provide clinical leadership to a multi-disciplinary team.
* Supervision of junior medical staff; knowledge of supervision and appraisal requirements; Approved Educational Supervisor training;
* Awareness of stressors in being a consultant psychiatrist and strategies to manage them.
Research, Audit & Education
* Experience in carrying out an audit project and involvement in research with potential publication.
* Ability to supervise junior medical staff undertaking research projects; capacity to critically appraise published research.
Professional and Legal
* Disclose and Barring Service (DBS) check as part of the Disclosure process.
* Be able to work within the requirements of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions Order) 1975.
