The role
The Financial Times is seeking an enterprising reporter to generate scoops and insightful corporate coverage from Hong Kong, one of Asia’s most important business hubs. Working alongside colleagues who cover finance, markets and mainland China business, we will look for you to cover anything that touches on Hong Kong specifically, including broader stories about the city.
After pro-democracy protests in 2019, the subsequent national security law and a protracted recovery from Covid, Hong Kong is looking for its next act. Beijing has signalled the city will play a big part in its future plans, with IPOs picking up; Hong Kong’s leaders are looking towards the Middle East and Southeast Asia for new sources of growth, even as they remain hypersensitive to any sign of domestic dissent.
Many of Hong Kong’s big business families and their companies are under strain as a result of China’s property downturn. Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong’s airline, is of enduring interest to our readers, and the city is an important shipping hub, home to numerous shipowners, brokers and others who serve them, all with interesting stories to tell. Many mainland companies are listed in Hong Kong, and there are opportunities to write about them, contributing to our broader coverage of China. Another area of interest is professional services in Hong Kong, including the Big 4 accountancies, law firms and the many consultants who serve multinational business in the city.
The correspondent will also pick up broader coverage of Hong Kong as a city: its politics; its economy, including the ever volatile property market; and any general news that may come along. News and analysis for the companies and world pages are at the centre of the role but there are also opportunities to write across all parts of the FT, including features and potentially the Weekend FT as well.
Your Skills
The challenge in this role is to conceive and report business stories that will appeal to the FT’s global audience. Along with proven skills in source-building and spotting stories, you will have a hunger to understand how the world works, what makes companies tick and what’s on the minds of corporate leaders - and then to share that understanding with our readers. Some prior business or finance experience, whether as a journalist or not, would be helpful, but genuine enthusiasm for the subject is what matters most of all.
Strong capability to write in English is essential. Good communication skills are important. Collegiality is central to the FT’s culture and you will need to work closely with correspondents around the region as well as in London and New York.
Hong Kong is the FT’s regional hub. One of the most cosmopolitan cities in Asia, it offers a high quality of life. Skills in Mandarin and especially in Cantonese would be extremely valuable for this role.
