Job Overview

CLINICAL CODING DELIVERY MANAGER – responsible for the day‑to‑day management of clinical coding staff and ensuring accurate, timely coding for NHS England ATLAS system, supporting payment by results across Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The role offers fully remote working with the option to work across Trust sites.


Main Duties

* Manage the operational delivery section of the clinical coding team, maintaining effectiveness and a high standard of work.
* Oversee day‑to‑day processes that support operational delivery, including management of Teams channels, review of rotas, and other related tasks.
* Extract and analyse highly complex patient data from clinical records to identify appropriate diagnoses and procedures in line with current national guidelines, applying judgement where necessary to ensure accuracy.
* Handle all clinical coding queries and collaborate with clinicians to resolve coding issues.
* Plan and prioritize own workload and that of the team to achieve departmental objectives.
* Stay up‑to‑date with current coding issues and developments within the department.
* Create an environment conducive to continuous learning and skill development.
* Ensure all coding is completed accurately and timely, meeting national and contractual mandates, and provide regular progress updates to the Clinical Coding Manager.


Qualifications

* Excellent standard of education.
* Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC).
* Degree level education or equivalent experience.
* Managerial qualification or equivalent experience.
* Completed the Clinical Coding Standards Refresher course within the last 12 months.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

* Demonstrated coding accuracy levels exceeding the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) standards.
* Knowledge of national benchmarking systems relevant to clinical coding, such as HED and metrics including SHMI/HSMR.
* Experience working with clinicians and senior staff.
* Experience delivering presentations on clinical coding.
* Comfortable working in an office environment.
* Excellent medical terminology and anatomy/physiology knowledge.
* Initiative to make operational decisions and organise workloads.
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
* Work effectively under pressure to meet challenging deadlines.
* Knowledge of data protection legislation, Caldicott, and other relevant guidance.
* In-depth understanding of clinical coding rules and conventions.
* Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office and EPR systems.
* Familiarity with NHS classifications, such as inpatients and day cases.
* Knowledge of Payment by Results.


Additional Requirements

* Excellent concentration skills and attention to detail.
* Flexible approach to work and use of PC/VDU for a substantial proportion of the day.
* Willingness to travel across Trust sites.
