A Vacancy at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

Acute Oncology Service – Adult

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust for a Band 7 Acute Oncology / Cancer of Unknown Primary Clinical Nurse Specialist. We are looking for an experienced, motivated, and dynamic nurse to join our small, friendly and forward‑thinking team.

The Acute Oncology Team provides early specialist care to oncology patients, enabling safer and better quality care for patients with complications of treatments or new diagnoses. You will need the skills and confidence to urgently review patients with complications of cancer and ensure appropriate pathways of care are set in place. The role also provides specialist support to patients with Cancer of Unknown Primary through the pathway of care from diagnosis to end‑of‑life care.

The post holder should demonstrate specialist knowledge and experience related to all aspects of oncological malignancy, have worked in a senior nursing role, and be educated to first‑degree level. The AOS team covers both QMC and City sites Monday‑Friday; the successful candidate will be expected to be flexible to meet the changing needs of the service in the future.

Key duties include prioritising workloads, using initiative, and managing a caseload of patients autonomously. You will also assist in implementing and providing formal and informal education programmes on the Acute Oncology Service to staff within the Trust.

We are committed to delivering the highest quality of care and maintaining consistently high standards in a professional and friendly atmosphere. NUH’s values and behaviours are summarised in the post specification.

Responsibilities

* Work with the Lead Clinician for the AOS and CUP service and relevant members of the MDT, attending regular MDTs and meetings.
* Facilitate communication and coordinated care between primary, secondary and tertiary care providers in relation to acute oncology.
* Establish clinical pathways between primary and secondary care.
* Utilise specialist knowledge and skills and liaise with multidisciplinary teams involved in new diagnosis and management of patients with cancer.
* Autonomously provide specialist assessment, triage and care to patients with complex acute oncology needs.
* Offer compassionate, sensitive care ensuring physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs are met.
* Work with the CUP team to develop a service for this specialist group of patients, including MDT and outpatient clinics.
* Act as a clinical expert and professional resource for patients, carers and health care professionals.
* Influence patient care through indirect roles of providing specialist education.
* Develop and implement clinical guidelines, protocols and standards.
* Undertake audits and service developments within the AOS.
* Promote joint working and collaborative practices with colleagues, patients, carers, other health and social care professionals and statutory, voluntary and independent organisations, ensuring optimum patient management and the timely, smooth transition of care.
* Provide professional specialist leadership and effective management of resources, ensuring high standards of nursing care are delivered to all patients requiring input from the AOS.

This advert closes on Sunday 28 Dec 2025.
