Senior Principal Applied Psychologist – Gender Identity Service
NHS Lothian Clinical Health Psychology Service is pleased to advertise this permanent Senior Principal Applied Psychologist position within the Gender Identity Service at Chalmers Sexual Health Centre in Edinburgh. The Chalmers Gender Identity Clinic offers assessment and access to medical and non‑medical interventions for gender incongruence or dysphoria, and provides information, advice and support to individuals accessing the clinic from a multidisciplinary team of specialists in gender identity, mental health, reproductive endocrinology and speech and language therapy.
This post provides an exciting opportunity to further develop the Psychology service to the GIC, providing direct clinical input across the whole service pathway and indirect support to the GIC team and wider stakeholders via supervision, reflective practice, training and consultation. The successful candidate will also have operational management responsibility for the psychologists (also based at Chalmers) working in HIV/Sexual Health.
Working hours and remuneration
As of 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will be reduced from 37 to 36 hours per week. Part‑time hours will be reduced pro‑rata. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will ensure that pay is not affected.
Requirements
The successful applicant must hold a PVG Scheme membership/record. If the candidate is not a current member for the relevant regulatory group (child and/or adult), an application to Disclosure Scotland will be required before beginning the role.
Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, the role may require a different level of criminal records check than is currently the case. If the position is assessed as a regulated role, the appointment will be subject to the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. Any changes to these requirements will be confirmed by the hiring manager or recruitment team.
All candidates will need to demonstrate that they have permission to work in the United Kingdom, as required by the UK Visa and Immigration Service.
Additional information
The use of the term “Senior” or “Junior” in this post refers only to the level of experience and responsibility required for the post, not to age. Applications from people of all ages are welcomed, provided they meet the relevant criteria.
The post holder will be supported in providing an inclusive environment. We fully support disabled candidates, and candidates with long‑term conditions or who are neurodivergent, through reasonable adjustments to recruitment policy and practices.
