Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic pharmacist to join the Surgery Pharmacy Team at the Royal London Hospital. The Surgery Division provides a range of emergency and elective surgical services to the local and wider North East London communities. The successful applicant will have significant proven experience, be expected to lead and provide medicines reconciliation services, medicines optimisation, specialist pharmacist input and pharmacy transcribing services across elective surgery wards, supporting other wards and services as needed. They are expected to have leadership skills and support junior staff, including trainee and foundation pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, to provide excellent person-centred service delivery alongside MDT colleagues. The successful candidate will need to be flexible, forward thinking, and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills as they will have everyday contact with a range of multi-professional colleagues. This is a great opportunity to work in one of the most complex and specialist elective pathways across the country, with an opportunity to get involved in multiple projects and work alongside the nursing and surgical teams to improve surgical care for patients of North East London and beyond.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will carry out the full range of duties as a Specialist Pharmacist in Elective Surgery to deliver patient focused, quality care, based primarily at the Royal London Hospital. Their primary role will be to look after the elective surgery ward, day surgery unit, and also work as a specialist pharmacist across the elective pathway, covering other areas of the service as required. The post holder will also support across theatres, pain and anaesthetic services across the Royal London Hospital alongside the Lead Pharmacist, Surgery and Anaesthetics. To promote responsible, safe and cost-effective prescribing of medicines within surgery, peri-operative care and pain in order to optimise clinical outcomes, minimise adverse reactions and improve medicines safety. The post holder will support the Lead Pharmacist in leading a team of staff in delivering high quality clinical, professional and technical pharmacy services to the specialty.

Person Specification – Essential Experience

* Experience of working in a high acuity unit such as acute medical admissions, acute surgical admissions or another rotational role
* Proven experience of good performance in previous posts. Previous evaluations or reviews of medicines
* Foundation knowledge in providing a hospital based pharmacy service to medical and surgical wards
* Some experience of basic teaching and tutoring in a hospital setting through training others e.g. pre-registration / foundation training pharmacists / nurses / junior doctors

Person Specification – Essential Qualifications

* MPharm or equivalent
* Registered as a pharmacist with the GPhC
* Minimum of a postgraduate certificate in clinical pharmacy or a Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy / Pharmacy Practice or equivalent
* Must have started working on the second stage of the diploma
* Independent Prescriber or willing to work towards qualification


Person Specification – Desirable Qualifications

* GCP Trained in clinical trials
