Location: Edinburgh. Salmon Scotland offers blended office and home working, with an expectation for 2 days per week in the office.
Hours: Full time (35 working hours per week)
Salary: up to £50k depending on experience and skills, plus holiday package, pension contribution, private health cover, income protection, employee assistance programme, death in service benefit, cycle to work scheme and training opportunities.
Travel: The role will involve some travel in Scotland and very occasional overseas travel.

The role
This is a broad ranging technical role, within the Technical Services and Regulation team. The post holder will focus on activities that support our members in the areas of fish health and welfare, biodiversity, consenting, and regulatory reform. The role will also oversee commissioned project work. The postholder will be responsible for their own specific workstreams, alongside a small number of routine data collection and reporting functions.
The post will report to the Head of Technical but will be expected to work collaboratively with all members of the Salmon Scotland team.
Duties
Salmon Scotland delivers value to its members by enabling change and progress, problem solving, networking, horizon scanning and by providing a single voice for the sector. All duties of the Technical Manager fall within these value offerings.
The postholder will:
· Lead on defined activities within technical support, with a focus on fish health and welfare (inc. cleanerfish), biodiversity, farm consenting and regulatory reform.
· Draw together varying technical information and expertise to deliver tasks and workstreams identified by Salmon Scotland's key working groups, our Board and those arising from statutory bodies.
· Work closely with relevant statutory bodies to understand and ensure appropriate delivery of regulatory controls as relevant to fish health and consenting.
· Support members and the wider Salmon Scotland team in addressing ad hoc challenges relating to fish health, consenting and biodiversity.
· Manage the delivery of projects relating to the Salmon Scotland business plan and other workstreams as they arise.
· Organise and lead our annual technical seminar event.
· Maintain strong networks across our membership, regulators, and other stakeholders.
· Arrange, attend, and chair sector working group meetings, as well as meetings with regulators and relevant stakeholders.
· Oversee the delivery of relevant consultation responses, briefing papers, and policy documents.
Who are we looking for? Experience, skills and qualities
This is an exciting and broad ranging role, which covers several areas within Technical Services and Regulation, including fish health and welfare, biodiversity, consenting and regulatory reform, and with project management skills a must. We are looking for someone with a good, technical knowledge, including a background in one or more of the key areas listed above. Training will be provided for areas that are less familiar to the postholder.
Our team has experience across multiple technical areas. We use peer support within our team, alongside training and the expertise of our members, to develop the skills and knowledge needed to deliver value for the industry. Priorities can change at short notice.
We are looking for someone with a good understanding of fish farming, who has several years' experience in the sector. Networking and the ability to build effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders is vital attribute for this role. The successful applicant will be team player, and comfortable working in a small, tight knit team. The demands of the role can be high and varied, but we work together to support one another, at the same time ensuring a healthy work-life balance.
The following would be desirable:
* A degree or equivalent experience in biological science, environmental science, marine or freshwater biology or an aquaculture related discipline.
* A knowledge of fish farming and ideally the salmon farming sector.
* Three or more years' working experience.
* Passion and drive to support Scotland's salmon farming sector.
* Technical report writing experience, including an ability to summarise complex technical information for a range of audiences.
* Excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to draw together varied and complex information to deliver projects and activities.
* Diligent, with a keen eye for detail and persistence to ensure the highest standards are met.
* The ability to build a good network and relationships.
* Exceptional communication skills – clear, confident speaker and professional writing style.
* Willing to lead in the absence of peers.
* An ability to work independently and proactively.
* Willing to diversify their role as the needs of the sector and organisation shift.
* Strong work ethic, self-motivation and a desire to succeed.
* A good team worker, with a flexible approach.
* A full UK driving licence is a must, with access to a vehicle for travel to members sites and other facilities.
