About us
Our mission is to deliver joy in every shop, through unbeatable choice, unrivalled service and reassuringly good value.
We’re Ocado Retail, a market-leading, joint venture between Ocado Group and M&S and the world’s largest dedicated online supermarket. We’re also the brains behind, our same-day grocery delivery service.
About the team and the role
Data & Insight
Data & insight is at the heart of the Ocado retail grocery team. From advising the buying team on promotions to run and products to range, to understanding how our customers buy their weekly shopping, through to building models for new loyalty schemes and personalised marketing campaigns, data and insight are critical to everything we do. We want our analysts to become experts in their business areas as well as have the skills needed to produce great insight. We therefore run regular training sessions to help develop the key skills needed – choosing visualisations, presentation skills, SQL, Tableau, statistics, and more.
The role
The Central Trading Insight team supports the buying teams within Ocado Retail with the data and insights needed to measure commercial performance, understand drivers, and make effective decisions.
Although the ability to extract and manipulate data from our databases, using SQL is critical, the demands of the role go well beyond those foundational technical skills. You will be expected to work with stakeholders to understand requirements, and scope projects, breaking more complex challenges into key milestones and managing your time to ensure deadlines are met. You will apply critical thinking to develop the best analytical approach to get to easy-to-understand, actionable insights and recommendations. Where appropriate, you will partner with insight colleagues in data science, reporting, customer, and merchandising to import expertise in such areas as statistics, predictive analytics, data visualisation, and automation.
This is a rewarding role, which will require you to learn at pace, in a sometimes challenging, but always highly supportive environment, whilst delivering real value to the business, almost from day one.
What you’ll do
1. Interrogate internal databases to provide recommendations to the trading team, and Ocado Retail’s senior leadership. This will involve shorter term, quick turnaround questions to help inform tactical decision making, and longer term projects shaping the future of Ocado Retail’s commercial strategy
2. Visualise data and present insight in a concise manner with presentations tailored to the technical level of the audience
3. Manage stakeholders, largely autonomously, to prioritise, scope, project manage, and complete analytical projects to better understand why customers buy what they do, and how we are able to influence their decisions with range, price, and promotions
4. Play a leading role in drawing out the commercial implications of analysis
5. Devise solutions and construct tools that enable data to provide answers to key business questions
6. Mentor less experienced members of the team, and play a key role in ensuring accuracy, quality and relevance of their work
7. Apply statistical techniques such as regression modelling to quantify the impact of variables affecting historical commercial performance, and build predictive models for future performance, as well as applying statistical tests to validate the robustness of recommendations
Example Projects
8. Devising a method for measuring the performance impact of running promotions, and producing reporting to visualise the results in an accessible way
9. Devising a method for measuring the performance impact of delisting products, and automating push alert notifications for relevant stakeholders, linked to a diagnostic tool enabling detailed investigation
10. Developing a cost to serve profit model, which apportions all of Ocado’s various cost and income types to product level to get a view of ‘landed’ margin
Who you are
Essential:
11. SQL - you will either have some prior experience, or an eagerness and aptitude to learn at pace (with extensive training and support in the first weeks in role)
12. Numeracy - demonstrated by one or more of: i. a good grade at Maths A level, ii. a STEM degree, iii. significant working experience with data and analysis
13. Critical thinking and problem solving
14. Commercial awareness
15. Excellent Microsoft Office/Google Suite skills
16. Managing relationships/influencing across multiple stakeholders and teams
17. Data visualisation and ‘science communication’ skills - making the complex seem simple
18. Project/workload management
Advantageous:
19. Experience in a retail, e-commerce or FMCG consumer-facing business
20. VBA/Google apps script
21. Tableau
22. Python
