Offer description

The Department of History (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/history/) seeks to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on 'Monastic Economies in the Carolingian Age - 'Farfa and Fulda', a partnership between the University of Liverpool and Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, funded by the AHRC and DFG. 'Monastic Economies in the Carolingian Age' is led by three Principal Investigators: Dr Marios Costambeys (Liverpool), Dr Johanna Jebe and Prof Steffen Patzold (both Tübingen). In addition to the Postdoctoral Research Associate advertised here, based in Liverpool, the project team includes a Postdoctoral Research Associate, Student Assistants and Digital Humanities support based in Tübingen. The project aims to bring to light the workings of the economies created by the massive transfer of land to ecclesiastical institutions in the early medieval Latin West. It focuses on two of the major monasteries of the Carolingian age (broadly, the eighth and ninth centuries CE) Farfa in Italy and Fulda in Germany. It will prepare critical digital editions of the relevant texts from each monastery (Module 1); analyse comparatively the monasteries` management of their estates, especially through leasing (Module 2); define their terminology of measurement and scale (Module 3); and place their economic practices in the context of their spiritual and intellectual culture (Module 4). You will work principally on Modules 1, 2 and 4. You will be based in the Department of History at the University of Liverpool, within the School of Histories, Languages, and Cultures. You will demonstrate a strong interest in the history of monasticism and monastic leadership in the context of early medieval western European society, as well as knowledge of applying Digital Humanities to the study of the European middle ages. You must have an excellent working knowledge of Latin, experience of working with medieval Latin texts and manuscripts and proficiency in modern Italian, German and French. This post is available on a fixed term basis for 34 months, from 2 March 2026. If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31. We actively seek to attract, develop, and retain colleagues with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
