Overview

An exciting secondment opportunity within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) for a Band 6 Sister / Charge Nurse to join our team. There are 2 posts available and full or part time will be considered.

Responsibilities

* Provide strong clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and support staff, ensuring effective running of the ward/department in the absence of the Department Ward Manager.
* Offer advice and support for colleagues to plan, monitor, implement and evaluate skilled and appropriate care for patients and ensure the provision of evidence-based practice.
* Work within the NMC Code and professional nursing guidance.
* Provide senior nursing advice and support to facilitate high-quality, individualised care in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.
* Manage and coordinate complex clinical situations, taking appropriate action in emergencies or unforeseen circumstances.
* Be clinically competent and confident in the use of specialised equipment in varied clinical settings; act as a clinical role model and leader for all staff.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care, actively seeking evidence-based practice to improve quality of care; adopt a holistic approach to patient care.
* Contribute to setting and monitoring standards of nursing care within the ward; liaise with medical staff and other disciplines on patient care management.
* Ensure patient care is delivered within the Nursing and Midwifery Scope of Professional Practice and Code of Professional Conduct; promote patient and relative involvement in care management.
* Share responsibility for delivering patient care by all nursing team members on the unit; maintain safe drug handling practices in line with statutory and Trust requirements.
* Undertake appropriate training to expand relevant clinical skills and maintain safe staffing levels during shifts.
* Identify clinical risks and act in accordance with the Trust risk management policy; maintain nurse documentation to Trust standards.


People Management

* Assess and develop action plans to meet individual development needs; participate in orientation for new nursing staff.
* Monitor staff performance, participate in Individual Performance Appraisal and support revalidation.
* Deploy and utilise staffing resources effectively; support team members and assist in selection, appointment and induction of new staff.
* Ensure staffing levels and skill mix reflect workload and patient needs; assist with off-duty, annual leave, sickness and absence management.


Leadership Development

* Promote a learning-friendly environment; participate in staff education and development, mentoring learners and nursing teams.
* Contribute to a positive learning environment for colleagues, patients and visitors; assess learning and development needs of ward staff.
* Assist in development, implementation and monitoring of specialty-based teaching; ensure personal development is maintained for revalidation.
* Be responsible for continuing professional development and overall performance of a delegated group of staff; supervise junior nurses, students and HCAs to maintain high standards of care.
* Share highly specialist knowledge within the Trust and support ward and trust-wide good practice.


Budget and Governance

* Ensure effective use of resources, including stock management and equipment care/maintenance.
* Handle patients’ valuables securely; authorise timesheets for temporary nursing and support staff as appropriate.


Research, Audit and Personal Development

* Develop and implement methods of auditing nursing practice; promote awareness of current nursing research and apply findings where relevant.
* Promote dissemination of local/national/international research; identify areas for local audit, conduct audits and analyse data with support.
* Participate in data collection to improve patient care; maintain a professional portfolio and reflective diary for revalidation.
* Responsible for continuing professional development and identifying development needs within Trust processes.
