The Marine Society and Sea Cadets (MSSC) is a vibrant charity delivering nautical adventure for young people through the Sea Cadets, providing personal and professional development opportunities for seafarers. We aim to improve the lives of thousands of young people and seafarers, supported by our dedicated volunteers.
We are seeking an OTW Project Assistant to support the delivery of the On The Water project at our Birmingham boating station. The project offers young people aged 9-14, outside Sea Cadets, the chance to learn boating skills and build confidence. This rewarding role requires someone self-motivated, organized, creative, positive, IT competent, and enthusiastic about working with people.
Project activities run from 29 July 2024 to 30 August 2025, with daily responsibilities including registration, managing group changeovers, tracking targets, encouraging surveys, and filling booking gaps. Before the delivery phase, the role involves supporting bookings and community outreach. Afterward, focus shifts to evaluation, data collection, and assisting participants in joining their local Sea Cadet unit.
Key Responsibilities
1. Register and welcome participants for the On The Water project
2. Collect and upload daily project statistics
3. Make new and repeat bookings
4. Engage with participants and their parents/carers about Sea Cadets opportunities
5. Manage waiting lists and reduce dropouts
6. Ensure safety and wellbeing of participants alongside station staff
7. Encourage survey completion and feedback from adults
8. Attend project meetings as required
9. Support project evaluation and data collection
Requirements
1. Experience working with volunteers
2. Customer-facing role experience
3. Experience working with young people
4. Experience with diverse community groups or outreach
5. Data tracking and management skills
6. Self-motivated with effective time management
7. Flexible and enthusiastic
8. Team player with creative ideas to empower volunteers
9. Satisfactory DBS clearance
