Applications are invited for a Fixed Term Contract for 12 months, full‑time (10 PAs) Consultant Medical Microbiologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. A working week of 9.25 PAs could be considered if an applicant wishes to work less than full time, based on current service requirements.
Overview
The role incorporates laboratory duties, results authorisation and interpretation, clinical and antibiotic advice, patient consults, ward rounds, MDT meetings, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control, clinical governance, teaching and training, research and an on‑call component. A dedicated part of this post will be for Infection Control Doctor provision, shared with other consultant colleagues in the Department, working alongside the Microbiology team, the hospital or community Infection Prevention and Control teams (IPCT) and the Director of Infection Prevention and Control. There will also be a requirement to lead a Speciality MDT.
The Microbiology Laboratory is based at the Queens Medical Centre (QMC) Campus; clinical duties will be required at both QMC and the City Hospital Campus. It serves both NUH campuses and community healthcare services such as the Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust and the Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System, with a total population of ~640,000.
The laboratory delivers a large volume of acute diagnostic work (approximately 918,000 items per year, including 604,000 bacteriology and 314,000 virology/serology), with two thirds acute hospital diagnostic work and one third general practitioner work.
Responsibilities
* Deliver a comprehensive clinical Microbiology service, including laboratory duties, results authorisation and interpretation, clinical and antibiotic advice, patient consults, ward rounds and MDT meetings.
* Provide antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control support to the Trust and community.
* Engage in clinical governance, teaching and training, and research.
* Participate in on‑call duties.

* Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the GMC, or eligibility for registration within six months of interview.
