Teaching Assistant – SEMH / Alternative Provision

Rate: £90–£110 per day

About the Role
We are recruiting a compassionate and proactive Teaching Assistant to support pupils within a specialist alternative education setting in South Shields. This provision supports children and young people who face social, emotional and behavioural challenges and require a more personalised approach to learning.
You will play a key role in helping pupils re-engage with education, develop confidence, and build positive relationships in a structured and supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs.
2. Support learning activities across a personalised curriculum.
3. Assist pupils with emotional regulation and behaviour strategies.
4. Build trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement.
5. Support teachers in creating a calm, inclusive learning environment.
6. Monitor and report on pupil progress and wellbeing.
Skills & Experience
7. Experience working with children or young people in education or care.
8. Knowledge of SEMH, behaviour support or trauma-informed practice is desirable.
9. Calm, patient and resilient approach.
10. Strong communication and teamwork skills.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
