Job Summary:
The Buyer will be based in our East Kilbride office with responsibility for sourcing, negotiating, and procuring construction materials, plant and equipment, while ensuring cost-effectiveness and quality standards for the business operations UK wide. This role requires strong supplier relationship management skills and a thorough understanding of the construction industry's procurement processes. The buyer will report into the senior buyer
Key Responsibilities:
* Identify, evaluate, and negotiate with suppliers to procure and place orders for materials and plant plus associated services at competitive prices and in line with service level agreements in place.
* Ensure timely delivery of materials and equipment to meet project schedules and timescales.
* Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and manufacturers.
* Monitor market trends, material costs, and supply chain risks to optimise procurement strategies.
* Collaborate with contracts managers, quantity surveyors, and site teams to understand material and plant requirements.
* Prepare and issue purchase orders, ensuring compliance with company policies and project specifications.
* Assess supplier performance and resolve any issues related to quality or delivery.
* Maintain accurate procurement records, contracts, and reports.
* Ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations in all purchasing activities.
* Support the estimating function by issuing and obtaining competitive quotations for key material and plant elements.
* Proactively resolve invoice queries and/or order anomalies to maintain productivity.
* Effectively manage the balance of material and plant orders to maximise rebate and best value opportunities and keep the operational and commercial teams up to date on procurement rational.
* Any other reasonable management request.
Key Requirements:
* Proven experience as a Construction Buyer or in a similar procurement role within the construction industry.
* Strong negotiation and analytical skills.
* Excellent communication skills written and verbal.
* Ability to analyse data to determine best value for money.
* Ability to instruct and direct others.
* Experience of tendering and estimating processes.
* Excellent knowledge of construction materials and plant, suppliers, and procurement best practices.
* Proficiency in procurement software and Microsoft Office Suite and Excel.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
* Strong organisational skills with attention to detail.
* Knowledge of UK construction regulations and supply chain management.
* Relevant qualifications in procurement, supply chain management, or construction (e.g., CIPS, HNC/HND in Construction or related field) are desirable.
