Highly Specialised Cardiac Physiologist in Cardiac Devices

A vacant full‑time position for a Highly Specialised Clinical Physiologist – Cardiac Devices has arisen at Mersey West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
The role requires an RCCP registered Physiologist with a postgraduate qualification in a specialised area and sufficient post‑qualification experience. The candidate must demonstrate flexibility, good communication skills and the ability to work as a team member.
Work will be based in Whiston Hospital and will require flexible working across all Mersey West Lancashire sites.
Main duties of the job
* Assist with the provision of Cardio‑Respiratory services throughout the Trust and partnership agencies, ensuring high standards for routine and emergency work.
* Provide highly specialised supervision within a particular area of the service.
* Continuously consolidate and expand skills, updating knowledge in line with local and national policy.
* Participate in relevant societies, local and national groups and committees.
* Adhere strictly to all Department and Trust policies.
* Deputise for the department manager when necessary.
Job responsibilities
* Provide fully comprehensive, unsupervised reports of a highly professional standard across a range of procedures.
* Use clinical judgement to act on reports in an unsupervised manner.
* Possess highly specialised knowledge and skill in at least one specialist area, responsible for its development and delivery.
* Supervise testing in the specialised area.
* Develop and implement relevant policies and procedures.
* Produce costs for each procedure.
* Implement staff training programmes for all levels of staff.
* Peer‑evaluate competency levels.
* Maintain stock control and consumable costs in the specialised area.
* Maintain optimal functioning and regular servicing of equipment.
* Initiate research and audit programmes to review services and monitor capacity.
* Provide regular updates to the manager on service progress and redesign.
* Commit to setting up new services and expanding the Physiologist role into areas traditionally covered by doctors.
* Deputise for other service leads in their absence.
* Participate in out of hours sessions when required.
* May be required to participate in a 24‑hour on‑call emergency rota covering invasive and non‑invasive tests.
* During out of hours or on‑call sessions, assume managerial control of departmental issues as designated by the manager.
Clinical & Professional responsibilities
* Deliver clinical skills and knowledge unsupervised across a wide range of basic and specialised procedures.
* Be proficient in a wide range of invasive and non‑invasive cardiac procedures.
* Provide high quality care for patients.
* Deliver complex information and instruction sensitively, considering diverse patient needs.
* Communicate patient information and test results to a wide range of staff groups.
Administrative responsibilities
* Ensure the accuracy and quality of data in line with departmental policies and procedures.
Teaching & training responsibilities
* Design and implement training and education programmes in own specialist area.
* Assisting with the delivery of education programmes across a broad range of subjects to staff throughout the Trust.
* Actively participate in mentorship arrangements and liaise with higher education institutes for teaching and placements when required.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Degree in Cardiac Clinical Physiology or equivalent qualification/experience.
* RCCP Registration.
* ILS Qualification.
* MSCST/master’s level qualification or equivalent within a specialised field (BSE / NASPE / BPEG / ARTP).
* IT Qualification.
* ALS Qualification.
* Managerial Qualification.
Knowledge & Experience
* Substantial number of years post qualification.
* Experience in a broad range of cardiac respiratory tests.
* Specialist knowledge in a range of cardiac respiratory tests.
* Supervision of staff.
* Experience in on‑call/out of hours service.
* Managerial experience.
Skills
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team as well as independently.
* Ability to work in a pressurised environment using highly technical equipment safely and produce complex unsupervised reports.
