 
        
        Overview
The role of the Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) is to provide highly specialised surgical assistance to the Urological Surgical team in the operating theatres and contribute to the urological outpatient diagnostic service. The post holder will participate in operative procedures and aspects of pre-, peri-, and post-operative care under the direction of a Consultant Urological Surgeon. The SCP will liaise with a varied multidisciplinary team to ensure a seamless surgical experience and will participate in the training and education of appropriate team members through teaching, research and audit. The SCP will perform as an assistant for all surgical procedures, in particular robotically assisted surgery, including skills such as skin preparation, draping, clamping, cutting, tying, sponging, suctioning and skin closure directed by the attending surgeon. In the outpatient setting, the SCP will undertake outpatient procedures such as local anaesthetic transperineal prostate biopsies, working closely with the Urology CNS and ANP team.
Responsibilities
 * Assist in all surgical procedures, with emphasis on robotically assisted surgery, including preparation, draping, clamping, cutting, tying, sponging, suctioning and wound closure as directed by the surgeon.
 * Contribute to pre-, peri-, and post-operative patient care and ensure high standards of patient care.
 * Liaise with theatre and multidisciplinary teams to coordinate and support the smooth running of operating sessions.
 * Participate in the training and education of clinical staff in theatre practice; contribute to teaching, research and audit activities.
 * Work in the outpatient setting with procedures such as local anaesthetic transperineal prostate biopsies and support post-operative care in the outpatient setting.
 * Understand advanced surgical techniques and make professional and clinical decisions with accountability for the surgical assistant role.
 * Maintain advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology and current elective and emergency surgical techniques and equipment to achieve optimal surgical outcomes.
 * Develop and maintain skills for urological robotic and laparoscopic surgery, and contribute to the development of new equipment in conjunction with theatre personnel.
Qualifications and Skills
 * Advanced knowledge of anatomy and physiology relevant to urological surgery.
 * Good working knowledge and skill set for patients undergoing urological robotic and laparoscopic surgery.
 * Ability to make professional and clinical decisions and to be accountable for the surgical assistant role.
 * Effective communication and teamwork with theatre staff and multidisciplinary teams.
Pay, Flexibility and Working Arrangements
Pay will be Band 7 – Band 8a, dependent on experience and successful Urological diagnostic competencies sign-off. Flexible working arrangements will be considered to support a healthy work-life balance.
