We are looking for an experienced researcher with expertise in the generation and analysis of quantitative education data to work in the Observatory for Mathematical Education ; a collaboration between the School of Education and the School of Mathematical Sciences. The Observatory is generating state-of-the-art, evidence-driven, and policy-relevant research to improve mathematical education, learner outcomes and longer-term benefits for individuals and society. Its remit stretches through primary and secondary maths education, to undergraduate study and postgraduate research in the mathematical sciences.
The Observatory is exploring how learner pathways and outcomes are impacted by a range of societal, personal, and educational factors, through the generation and analysis of a groundbreaking primary dataset comprising multiple linked surveys as part of the Observatory's longitudinal cohort studies, and through the analysis of administrative datasets (e.g. the National Pupil Database). It is also undertaking additional evaluation and intervention projects in mathematics education.
The Observatory enjoys an excellent working environment where our talented and inclusive team can collaborate to deliver the highest quality research. We are seeking applications from quality candidates who can enhance the diversity of our existing team. The Observatory is committed to creating opportunities for people traditionally under-represented in mathematical education research and to enabling everyone to flourish. You must have expert knowledge of quantitative research methods and statistical techniques, but if you are not sure that you fulfil every other criterion in the role profile, we encourage you to apply anyway.
You will be able to carry out research of a high standard, and evidence how you will undertake original research of international excellence. It will be key that you prepare your work for publication in leading journals and contribute to its distribution at national and international meetings, as well as contributing to Observatory reports designed to be accessible to policy makers and other stakeholders.
This position is available from 5 January 2026 [or as soon as possible thereafter]. Hours of work are full time, though applications of 21 ¾ hours per week and above will be considered. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements with you, though secure data will need to be accessed via the Observatory's Data Lab on Jubilee Campus, University of Nottingham.
This position is a permanent role initially with underlying funding until 17 October 2028. Further funding is expected to extend this role and others to October 2033.
Interviews will be held on 09/10/2025.
If it sounds like you would be a good fit, we look forward to hearing from you. Please click 'apply now' and upload a copy of your CV and Cover Letter.
