Consultant Cardiologist – Complex Cardiac Devices & Pacing

Full Time – 10 sessions per week

Permanent

Salary: £113,565 – £150,569 per annum

Position Summary

  • This is a full‑time post for a Cardiology Consultant with special interest in complex cardiac devices and pacing (10.0 PA).
  • The appointee will work in collaboration with other Cardiology Consultants, Specialist Consultants, Doctors in Training, Cardiology Specialist Nurses and Physiological Sciences.
  • Deliver inpatient and outpatient Cardiology services to the local population serviced by the George Eliot Hospital Trust, sharing facilities and ensuring continuity of care.
  • Specific duties include up to four Cath Lab sessions per week and up to two outpatient clinics per week. A typical clinic will see 5 new patients and 4 follow‑up patients.

Main Duties

  • Support and develop the Cardiology service, providing daily review of patients and senior decision‑making to ensure optimal early review.
  • Contribute to the development of the Cardiology Department, shaping service for the future and providing a first‑class service for the population of Nuneaton, Bedworth, North Warwickshire, North Coventry and South West Leicestershire.
  • Play a key role in the Trust’s strategy to improve clinical models for managing unplanned medical attendances.
  • Engage in education and training with strong links to the University of Warwick.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead implanting and managing complex cardiac pacing devices including cardiac resynchronisation pacemakers and defibrillators.
  • Participate in a Consultant of the Week ward rota for the Coronary Care Unit (18 beds). Provide continuous 12‑lead ECG and haemodynamic monitoring as well as temporary cardiac pacing.
  • Utilise the diagnostic Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at George Eliot Hospital and work with the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire for interventional sessions.
  • Lead full pacing service (Single and Dual Chamber Implants, complex devices) in the Interventional Radiology Suite.
  • Participate in a GIM on‑call rota based at GEH.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Broad clinical experience within Cardiology, including inserting and managing complex cardiac devices.
  • Proficiency in performing and interpreting cardiac MR and Cardiac CT.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated understanding of the NHS.

Qualifications and Professional Training

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practice.
  • ALS Certification.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview date), CESR or European Community Rights.

Desirable

  • Appropriate higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent).

Skills and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of medical audit, education, current clinical and medical best practice.
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance processes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, liaison and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to advise efficient running of a specialist service and motivate staff.
  • Capacity to manage and lead a clinical team; supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainees and doctors.
  • Understanding of management concepts.

Desirable

  • Competent in basic information technology.
  • Experience in service development, awareness of health service reforms and issues across all healthcare economy.

Audit, Research and Publications

Essential

  • Undertaking complete audit cycle.
  • Participation in completed clinical research projects.
  • Application of research outcomes to clinical practice.
  • Publication in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance issues and research methodology.

Desirable

  • Recent evidence of relevant and continued research.
  • Higher degree by research.
