Consultant Psychiatrist
Positions in General Adult Psychiatry.
Iris Care Group is inviting applications for the position of Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry and Neuropsychiatry at St Peter’s Hospital, Newport. This is a senior clinical leadership role within a specialist low‑secure service that provides assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for adults with complex mental health and neuropsychiatric needs. The successful candidate will play a central role in delivering high‑quality, evidence‑based psychiatric care and in shaping the continued development of the service.
The post holder will provide medical leadership across the hospital, acting as Responsible Clinician for patients under their care and leading the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of comprehensive assessment, formulation and treatment. They will be responsible for ensuring that clinical practice remains safe, ethical and aligned with NICE guidance and professional standards. This includes the timely completion of psychiatric assessments, the preparation of detailed clinical reports for tribunals, Ministry of Justice processes and statutory bodies, and the development and review of clinical risk assessments.
Key responsibilities include:
4. Leading the MDT and coordinating integrated care planning
5. Producing high‑quality psychiatric reports for internal and external agencies
6. Maintaining robust clinical governance and safeguarding standards
7. Participating in the psychiatrist on‑call rota
8. Providing expert consultation to colleagues and external partners
9. Contributing to research, audit and service evaluation
10. Ensuring accurate clinical documentation using Care Partner and associated systems
The role also involves active participation in teaching, supervision and professional development. The post holder will provide specialist advice and training to MDT colleagues, engage in CPD and appraisal processes, and contribute to the development of a high‑quality, person‑centred service. Opportunities exist to participate in research, service evaluation and quality improvement initiatives, working closely with senior clinical and operational leaders.
Applicants must hold full GMC registration with a licence to practise and be included on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of achieving CCT. Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status are required, or the candidate must be willing to obtain them. Essential attributes include strong experience in adult psychiatry across hospital and community settings, excellent communication and leadership skills, and a commitment to evidence‑based practice and collaborative multidisciplinary working.
St Peter’s Hospital provides a supportive working environment. The post is full‑time at 37.5 hours per week, with accountability to the Iris Care Group Board of Directors and close working relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as care coordinators, locality consultants, MAPPA, the Ministry of Justice and regulatory bodies.
