Description Position Details Campus Services Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK Full time starting salary is normally in the range £29,647 to £31,460, with potential progression once in post to £35,388 Grade: 5 Part Time (17.5 hours per week) Fixed Term contract up to October 2026 Closing date: 4th January 2026 This role is also open as an internal secondment opportunity which would need to be agreed by your current line manager. Find out more about the benefits of working for the University of Birmingham Background Campus Services (CS) employs over 1000 staff with a turnover exceeding £65m in the last financial year. CS plays a key role in the quality of the student, staff and visitor experience, providing services across diverse areas such as the University’s sporting facilities, food and beverage, cleaning, conferencing, hotel operations, day nurseries, Portering, post, branded and own-brand retail outlets, visitor services and attractions (e.g., Winterbourne House & Gardens), student housing, transport, waste disposal and recycling. CS is a highly commercial organisation operating within the University context and has an ambitious strategic agenda, in terms of growing our service profile across both our Birmingham and Dubai campuses. Sport & Fitness is responsible for operating the University of Birmingham's extensive sport and recreation provision. It caters for the whole sports continuum from elite athlete to beginner; it supports 6,500 members, 40 performance clubs, over 50 sports scholars and offers an extensive participation and intra-league programme. It stages big events for a number of British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS), national governing bodies and external groups, with spectator numbers reaching 3,000 for an individual event and has recently hosted the Commonwealth games for Hockey and Squash competition as well as swimming and athletics training venues. It serves the many different user groups drawn from the University – societies, medical school, groups of friends and departments, and the city – athletic, swimming, football, rugby, hockey, and gymnastics clubs, as well as many schools, local authority groups and the more commercial providers. Role Summary The role will operate within the Birmingham Athletic Talent Hub, supporting the Head of Athletics (HoA) in key areas of programme delivery for athletes and coaches working within and outside of the University, the city and the region. The position will be crucial in building strong relationships with both the Hub and the University Athletics Club. It will involve ensuring that athletes and coaches receive clear communication, regular updates, and are motivated to engage with the staff, UB Performance Sport specialists, and each other. You will need to build and maintain strong relationships with NGB and external partners to support the department. Main Duties Working with the HoA, you will support the planning, running and development of all YTP sessions within established procedures, including the set-up of sessions. Working HoA and Local/EA to offer insight into the development of appropriate annual plans for YTP delivery days, working around national, regional and local planning needs. Promoting an enjoyable and inclusive atmosphere, ensuring good practice is applied throughout all sessions by always adhering to NGB and UoB policy and procedures. Provide motivation and encouragement to all team members and show commitment to the development of athletes and coaches, observe and make recommendations for individual and team performance improvements. Report on tracking documentation – working with the Pathway Engagement Team to keep records up to date, reporting on issues where they arise. Plan with the Head of Athletics, Sports Marketing Team and Club Officers to support social media presence of all Club and Hub promotional materials, stories and campaigns. Be a positive ambassador for the Talent Hub, UoB England Athletics and the Performance Pathway. To support the recruitment of talented student-athletes to the Hub environment. This will include assisting at Open Days and other targeted recruitment events held both internally and externally to the University. Act as a point of contact to provide accurate and timely information and advice to internal and external stakeholders on Athletics - processes and procedures, answering queries promptly, providing guidance and resolving queries from initial contact to resolution. This will include recognising when queries need to be referred elsewhere. Process all financial tasks relating to the Athletics Budget areas and accounts, including setting up new suppliers, raising invoices & purchase orders and receipting of goods. Make timely and accurate bookings on behalf of the Head of Athletics, and programme areas such as facilities, transport, catering and conferences. Monitor Monday.com (NGB report platform) for up-to-date records of all environment/Hub-based athletes and provide updates on gaps in the programme to HoA. It is a requirement of the post holder to be conversant with and work to UoB’s Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Policy and Procedures. To actively participate in job chats and personal development reviews; agree objectives and targets and work to achieve these within agreed timescales. Promotes equality and values diversity, acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture. Supports the University’s sustainability agenda through resource efficient working. Any other duties commensurate with the grade. Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience Educated to A Level standard, or equivalent level 3 qualification such as a Level 3 NVQ, or level 3 national diploma or relevant facilities work experience evidencing the skills and ability to undertake the role. Minimum of GCSE grade C or 4 in Mathematics and English at GCSE or equivalent level 2 qualification or relevant work experience evidencing numeracy and literacy. UKCC Level 3 coaching award (or equivalent). Due to the nature of the work undertaken in this role all successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory DBS clearance prior to appointment. Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly. Knowledge of integrated performance sport support services and their application. Experience of managing a small team. Experience of successfully leading others, preferably in both direct supervision of other paid employees and of volunteers. An in-depth understanding of coaching styles and practical delivery in Track and Field Athletics. Knowledge of the Higher Education/Further Education environment and the work to manage a dual career as a Performance Athlete within and beyond education. Knowledge of Athletics NGB structure at international, national and regional levels. Knowledge/understanding of equality and diversity related to sporting provision. Working knowledge & understanding of the AASE/DiSE qualification. Ability and track record of working as part of a busy team and working effectively under pressure to tight deadlines. A commitment to the development of your sport at all levels and understanding of the sports development and performance pathway processes. IT skills including competence in the use of word processing, and spreadsheet software. Commitment and enthusiasm to work evenings and weekends as required. Effective problem solving and decision-making skills. Ability to establish and maintain an environment of winning and success to support athletes and coaches on the Athlete Pathway. An empathy with working within a student and student-athlete environment. Ability to work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines. Dimensions This role will require the exercise of personal initiative within and beyond the department. You will manage the recruitment of staff, health and safety risk assessments and audits and the delivery of training. Planning and Organising You will be required to work independently on daily, weekly and monthly tasks but also on projects with medium-longer-term horizons without daily supervision. Problem Solving and decision making You will be working under the direction of a manager, with a significant degree of autonomy. You will deal with more complex queries and be expected to resolve any problems in your area of responsibility. You will also manage the training of others to achieve results. Internal and External relationships You will liaise with internal colleagues across the University and stakeholders.
