Job summary
This team provides 24‑hour, emergency, hospital‑based, mental health assessments for service users who have presented to A & E or have been admitted to the medical wards. The team provides short‑term, time‑limited input and has a liaison role. It is based at Christopher House (Royal Albert Infirmary, Wigan) and has been operational since November 2013.
Responsibilities
* Clinical role:
o Undertake assessments of referrals / admissions to the service.
o Diagnose and formulate management plans for complex presentations.
o Provide management in treatment‑resistant and complex presentations.
o Assess and manage risk including vulnerability, suicide risk, risks to health and safety and risk of harm to others.
o Act as the nominated RC for patients attending RAEI under section 17 leave at the request of ward RC.
o Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external partners.
o Work in partnership with psychiatrists from partner providers such as Forensic and Rehabilitation Psychiatrists.
* Leadership role:
o Lead clinical decision‑making in the multidisciplinary team to ensure high‑quality care.
o Develop service clinical priorities in line with national and professional guidance and standards.
o Engage with service transformation programmes, including attendance at consultant meetings for their service and directorate.
* Educational role:
o Provide clinical supervision for trainees in gaining core psychiatric experience.
o Supervise psychiatric trainees in achieving competencies in core general psychiatry.
o Provide input to medical students from UCLAN who are based on the ward.
Essential Qualifications
* MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
* Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
* Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months.
* Approved clinician status or able to achieve within three months of appointment.
* Approved under S12 or able to achieve within three months of appointment.
Desirable Qualifications
* Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
* MRCPsych or MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Additional clinical qualifications.
* In good standing with the GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.
Essential Skills
* Excellent knowledge in specialty.
* Excellent clinical skills using bio‑psycho‑social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
* Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty. Makes decisions based on evidence and experience.
Desirable Skills
* Wide range of specialist and sub‑specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
