Our Private Wealth and Tax team is highly regarded in the market for providing bespoke technical advice across a range of complex areas including tax and succession planning, Will and Trust drafting and administration, generational structuring, international and contentious probate, executory administration and in relation to adults with incapacity. We act for a wide range of clients and trusts and operate closely with colleagues across the firm’s Private Wealth sector most notably in rural and corporate.

We have a well-respected Charity Team dealing with a broad range of charities across the UK. Our focus is on quality and responsiveness to our clients’ needs, and we are seeking a technically strong individual with the drive to succeed in a challenging, varied and busy environment.


The role

Shepherd and Wedderburn are currently recruiting for a Solicitor to join their Private Wealth and Tax Team. The successful candidate will be at NQ level or up to two years' relevant experience in the private client sector. This role will be based at our Edinburgh office.

Technical / Legal Skills
* Demonstrate appropriate range of legal knowledge.
* Provide technical advice to colleagues.
* Produce effective drafts with minimum guidance.
* Present legal information in an understandable format with minimum guidance.
* Generate and implement new ideas in specialist area.
Business/Work Management
* Ensure personal WIP is effectively administered and consult on billing.
* Accurately administer time sheets.
* Identify strategies to manage work in order to attain objectives within agreed timescales and budgets.
* Keep all clients and colleagues up to date with latest developments.
* Implement improvements in working methods.
* Prepare for and attend meetings.
* Make effective use of the firm’s information management systems and comply with all legal and regulatory requirements.
* Comply with all firm policies and procedures, including financial.
Business Development
* Understand value of activity versus time spent.
* Assist in the development of credible marketing plans.
* Develop an understanding of the impact of external market forces on clients, identifying trends which may lead to business development opportunities.
* Develop effective ways of delivering client solutions with minimum guidance.
* Know main players at each client and build relationships.
* Demonstrate awareness of client care issues.
* Communicate feedback to partner/associate.
* Assist in assessing scope of work and fees within team.
* Participate in marketing activities.
* Demonstrate effective presentational and writing skills.
* Implement cross selling opportunities.
* Use knowledge as a marketing tool.
People Management
* Develop an effective personal presence with partners and colleagues.
* Delegate work effectively to both fee earning and non-fee earning staff – including objective setting and feedback.
* Demonstrate an ability to supervise work effectively.
* Demonstrate an understanding of expectations and objectives for team on transactions.
* Give well prepared and presented training sessions.
* Interact positively with colleagues in other sections.
* Develop leadership skills on client work and management.
Ethics, professionalism and judgment
* Recognise ethical issues and seek to address them with the appropriate person.
* Identify the relevant SRA or LSS principles and rules of professional conduct and seek assistance in applying them.
* Respect diversity, and act fairly and inclusively.
* Disclose when work is beyond personal capability and recognise when mistakes have been made and take appropriate action.
* Seek expert advice when required, and make effective use of feedback, guidance and support received.
Firm Contribution
* Be aware of and where appropriate, participate in the development of the team’s operational goals.
* Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between strategic and operational management.
* Participate in extra practice events to assist development of firm.
* Contribute to Knowledge Management goals of the firm.
