HV Electrical Engineer – 12 Month Contract (Glasgow)
Location: Glasgow – Hybrid. Contract: 12 months ongoing inside IR35. Rate: Negotiable dependent on experience.
Summary of the Role
The Electrical Engineer (High Voltage) will be working as part of a multi‑disciplinary engineering team within the Approval Authority. The primary purpose of the role is to directly support current operations and future programmes in respect to the high voltage system requirements, supporting nuclear facilities and delivering services across both of our client's Defence sites.
The team consists of Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Building Services, Electrical and Naval Architects responsible for the authorship, development, assessment and maintenance of Engineering Design Substantiation for our client's nuclear facilities, ensuring Design Intent, Critical Safety Factors and Safety and Operational Requirements are met and are consistent with current good practice and legislative/regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
* Author, develop, assess, maintain and manage the suite of our client's nuclear infrastructure design substantiation documents.
* Author, develop, assess, maintain and manage design changes and concessions.
* Present design substantiations to our client's nuclear safety committees.
* Produce and develop Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) schedules, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life.
* Produce/assess periodic safety review reports.
* Provide advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders.
* Produce Independent Technical Assessment (ITA) / Independent Peer Review (IPR) scopes of work.
* Apply emerging technology using a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge.
* Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re‑cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high‑risk environment.
* Provide robust technical justification to allow relevant high‑voltage electrical design modifications to be authorised within a high‑hazard industry.
* Review technical reports and other safety case submissions from external contractors.
* Check and review calculations and technical documents written by other staff members.
Position Requirements
Experience – Essential
* Experienced electrical engineer with previous knowledge of industrial plant and machinery in an HV environment (e.g., HV electrical supply network including cabling, substations).
* Knowledge of current design standards and working practices including British and European Standards.
* Theoretical and practical skill across concept design, detailed design and construction stages across a range of electrical engineering projects (ideally including industrial and/or maritime).
* Experience in the design assessment of HV electrical plant and equipment to withstand hazards.
* Experience of authoring and producing robust technical justification and supporting documentation to allow for relevant electrical design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry.
* Experience working on multi‑discipline projects providing engineering input (ideally within industrial and/or maritime).
Experience – Desirable
* Experience within Defence or nuclear environment.
* Familiarity with safety case development techniques such as HAZID/HAZOP studies.
* Experience working in the UK nuclear industry (energy or defence), particularly in the design and assessment of safety‑related structures, systems and components.
* Knowledge of UK and US nuclear industry regulation and practice, and application of relevant nuclear‑specific codes and standards.
Qualifications & Training – Essential
* Minimum HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline.
* Incorporated Engineer status or equivalent experience.
* For candidates from a non‑nuclear background, a nuclear introductory course would be required within six months of joining.
Qualifications & Training – Desirable
* Engineering degree.
* Chartered Engineer.
