We are seeking an experienced and passionate Primary Teacher Training Lead Mentor to join our SCITT training programme from September 2025. If you're committed to developing the next generation of outstanding primary teachers, we'd love to hear from you.
The role
As a Lead Mentor on our SCITT training programme, you’ll support a portfolio of North Devon-based Primary trainees to ensure successful progress toward QTS and the completion of their PGCE. You will visit trainees in school four times a year (with an additional introductory meeting) to monitor their progress and the quality of their placement. Through expert coaching and feedback, you’ll help trainees build strong pedagogical foundations and ensure their teaching practice reflects the highest standards. You will also play a key role in developing and supporting school-based mentors, ensuring consistency, quality, and shared high expectations across placements.
Key Responsibilities
Trainee Development & Quality Assurance
1. Support and challenge a portfolio of trainees to make strong progress
2. Conduct in-school visits (4 annually per trainee) to quality assure training and placement experience
3. Identify areas for development and report these to the SCITT
4. Work with the team to ensure all trainees are on track to meet the Teachers' Standards and be recommended for QTS.
5. Understand your Safeguarding obligations and the protection of children and young people by completing mandatory training and staying up to date on relevant policies.
What we’re looking for
Essential:
Primary Education Expertise
6. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
7. At least five years’ experience teaching in the primary phase with some leadership experience
8. Strong understanding of effective primary pedagogy and practice
9. Secure knowledge of the Teachers’ Standards and Core Content Framework/ Early Career Framework
Mentoring & Development Experience
10. A minimum of two years’ experience mentoring or coaching ITT trainees / ECTs / colleagues
11. Experience supporting the development of qualified teachers’ practice

13. Able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
14. Willing to engage with ongoing training provided by Exeter Consortium
Desirable:
15. Experience of using Instructional Coaching and Deliberate Practice for coaching and mentoring
16. Knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices and evaluating interventions
17. Experience in a school leadership role
