Overview

We are seeking an Afterschool & Holiday Club Assistant for an immediate start, subject to references and Access NI checks.

The Afterschool Assistant will assist the leader as appropriate in the planning, preparation and delivery of the session. Assistants will work to support the leader to provide a safe, stimulating environment for the children, with creative and appropriate play opportunities.

Hours: The Afterschool Assistant position operates during term time, Monday to Friday, from 1.30pm to 6pm. Holiday Club hours operate during non-term time holidays such as Halloween, Christmas, Easter and throughout the summer between 8am - 5.30pm. Additional hours when required may be available to ensure adequate staff ratios are maintained.

Responsibilities

* To help ensure that the arrival and departure of children is properly monitored;
* To act in a responsible manner towards children at all times;
* Provide for the needs of all the children in the group;
* To be responsible for ensuring that play materials and equipment are properly used;
* To assist in the preparation of refreshments for the children;
* To ensure that the areas used by the club are left tidy and to share responsibility for the preparation and presentation of displays in the setting;
* To record any accidents/incidents in the accident book and parents are properly informed;
* To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the leader;
* Help provide and take part in all the group's activities;
* To attend and contribute in full staff team meetings;
* To contribute to planning relating to activities for the children;
* Take part in special events and group outings;
* Encourage parental involvement and help to promote positive parental relationships;
* Listen to, encourage, enable, stimulate and ensure the safe keeping of the children;
* Assist the room Leaders with establishing roles for behaviour and procedures for maintaining behaviour. Also to promote independence and employ strategies to recognize and reward achievement of self reliance;
* Attend relevant and evening meetings and courses as directed by the leader or committee. Course fees will be met by the management for approved training;
* Keep confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff which is acquired as part of the job. Such information must not be passed on unless it is in the interest of a child. The Assistant will then approach the Leader with the information. If the Leader is not taking appropriate action the Assistant should seek the advice of the coordinator, Committee Chair and/or Social Services;
* Identify children showing signs of health related problems, bringing them to Leaders attention; and
* To be flexible with the working practices of the setting.

Criteria for the Post

While we are looking for candidates with the below criteria, we are also open to considering applicants who are actively working towards meeting the required qualifications.

Essential criteria:

* NVQ 3 or equivalent in Childcare or Playwork
* More than 1 year's continuous paid experience of working with primary aged children aged between 3 and 8 years.
* Excellent communication and organisation skills.

Desirable criteria:

* Experience of working with children in an afterschool setting
* A valid first aid certificate.
* Child Protection training.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: £12.24 per hour
