Background
The School of Health Sciences, Birmingham Medical School, is seeking two Associate Clinical Professors to work as Deputy Lead(s) for the Introductory Clinical Course (ICC).
The ICC is a new course designed for first and second‑year medical students as part of Curriculum 2030, introducing them to the clinical skills they will develop throughout their five‑year degree.
This role is an excellent opportunity for an experienced educator to join a dynamic undergraduate medical programme, help shape innovative clinical education, and inspire the next generation of doctors within the Birmingham Centre for Anatomy, Surgical and Clinical Skills Centre.
The post holder must be a practising GP (MRCGP), fully registered with a licence to practise with the GMC, and have evidence of participation in clinical appraisal and revalidation. Experience of working as a GP in the UK NHS system is required.
You will manage the day‑to‑day running of campus‑based ICC sessions, develop, evaluate and update teaching resources and assessments in line with the Curriculum 2030 learning outcomes. You will work alongside the GP Education team, Interactive Studies Unit and Clinical Teaching Fellows, report to the ICC lead, and train and share line management of initially 14 and, once year‑2 ICC has started, 28 total ICC Campus GP tutors who teach across Thursday and Tuesday sessions.
For this role, the holder must be available on‑site on Tuesdays and Thursdays to oversee the delivery of teaching on campus.
Additional expectations include demonstrating academic citizenship, fostering mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students, and ensuring your role positively impacts others.

Role Summary
Contribute at a senior level on a sustained basis to the entire spectrum of teaching leadership and administration. Additionally, you will be expected to demonstrate academic citizenship through generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students.
Teaching responsibilities may include: (a) development and leadership of major teaching programmes or equivalent; and (b) enhancement of the student experience or employability, providing manifest benefit to the College and the University. Expected contributions include significant advancement of teaching policy, practice, and standards, innovative leadership in teaching and learning, and national debate participation.
Management and administration responsibilities may involve departmental and school leadership with university‑wide involvement, including sustained high‑value impact knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and public engagement activities.
Main Duties
Education
* Make a significant contribution to the pedagogical knowledge base of the subject through the advancement of teaching practice, development of resources, and/or practice‑based research.
* Lead the management and development of teaching and learning approaches, including designing innovative methods and supporting colleagues in their adoption.
* Lead curriculum design at module and programme levels to ensure contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging content.
* Actively engage students in curriculum design.
* Contribute to debates about education policy, methods and practices through publications, subject societies and conference activity.
* Develop an external profile by engaging in external quality assurance activities related to teaching, for example, external examining and supporting education in other institutions.
* Play an important and sustained role in the recruitment and admission of students, where appropriate.
* Co‑supervise doctoral students to completion.
* Lead the development of teaching, learning and assessment policies and strategies.
* Act as an education mentor to colleagues in the School, Department, College or more widely.
* Lead the development of new and appropriate approaches to learning and teaching.
* Lead sustained high‑value impact in knowledge transfer and enterprise (including business engagement, public engagement) that enhances the student experience and/or employability, providing manifest benefit to the College and the University.
* Undertake own teaching, which includes teaching and examining courses at multiple levels, planning and reviewing own teaching approaches, developing programme proposals, supervision, marking and examining. Ensure teaching practice is informed by discipline‑based research and participation in the research culture of the School.
Management / Administration
* Make an important contribution to the development and running of the Department or School, for example, by leading teaching assessment activities.
* Lead successful international engagement at School or College level.
* Develop and manage staff and resources in support of major teaching activities.
* Contribute significantly to the development and delivery of the Department’s and the University’s learning and teaching strategy.
* Contribute to the development and delivery of knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement and public engagement activities with high‑value impact beneficial to the College and the University.

Person Specification
* Primary Medical Qualification (MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent) and MRCGP.
* Evidence of working as a General Practitioner in the NHS.
* Evidence of registration on the GMC GP Register with a licence to practise.
* Evidence of participation in clinical appraisal and revalidation.
* Knowledge of the GMC Outcomes for Doctors and the principles of the Medical Licensing Assessment.
* Demonstrated excellence in learning and teaching, and management and administration.

* Excellent teaching profile and performance in terms of both impact and quality, with teaching quality demonstrated by an appropriate scholarly level.
* Development of teaching and learning excellence within the discipline.
