Faculty Position in Computational Biology

Join to apply for the Faculty Position in Computational Biology role at University of Cambridge

Applications are invited for an Assistant/Associate Professorship in Computational Biology to commence on 1 April 2026 or shortly thereafter. This is a joint post between the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and the Department of Genetics. Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent and be able to demonstrate an outstanding research track record within the broad area of Computational Biology. Applications are particularly encouraged from those in areas that complement and extend pre‑existing strengths across Computational Biology at the University of Cambridge. An ability to teach in either the Mathematical Tripos or Natural Science Tripos is essential. Experience in encouraging and supporting applicants and students from groups underrepresented in STEM, including women, will be an advantage.

This faculty position is in support of our MPhil in Computational Biology hosted in DAMTP. Applicants will be expected to give undergraduate and masters‑level lectures, in particular contributing to the redesign of the MPhil in Computational Biology. The expected teaching load is likely to be two 24‑hour courses per year, plus examination of those courses. Applicants will also take feedback from students and provide career or pastoral advice to them, as well as performing other usual departmental duties, e.g. interviewing students. They will be expected to investigate new areas of research, seek out new funding opportunities and submit grant applications. They will also be required to write papers for publication, attend conferences, network with national and international colleagues and give presentations.

Appointment will be made at an appropriate point on the scale for University Assistant or Associate Professors. Appointment as an Assistant Professor will normally be for a probationary period of five years with appointment to the retiring age thereafter, subject to satisfactory performance. Appointment as Associate Professor will typically require a demonstrable history of exceptional achievement.

The Departments are committed to the responsible use of bibliometrics; applicants are asked not to include raw citation counts, Journal Impact Factors, the H-index or similar metrics in their applications.
* A statement of research of no more than two pages, outlining your current and future research plans, with an emphasis on how these fit within the current research profile of the Departments.
* A one-page statement focusing on your teaching experience and interests.
* Contact details including an email address of three academic referees. Please ensure that your referees are aware that they will be contacted at any time during the recruitment process and are made aware that they will be contacted by the Mathematics HR Office Administrator to request that they upload a reference for you via our Web Recruitment System, and please encourage them to do so promptly.
