The Role:
The post holder will drive the waste collection vehicles in a safe manner whilst providing advice and assistance to members of the public regarding waste collection services.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Drive and manoeuvre the vehicle to the collection points of all refuse containers
2. Depending on operations either:Empty contents of the vehicle at the landfill site or the Community Recycling CentreDrive vehicle to landfill site, composting or recycling plants as appropriate and offload contents in accordance with procedures in place at the relevant facilities
3. Supervision of assigned operatives. Ensure that assigned operatives fulfil their duties in full and in accordance with established procedures
4. Ensure the safety and security of the waste collection vehicle and carry out checks each morning using the relevant check sheet and report any defects or damage to the vehicle to the Mechanics/Operations Supervisor
5. Wash the vehicle externally each week and ensure the interior is adequately cleaned between bin collections to avoid contamination of loads that are consigned to the composting facility
6. Retain a level of knowledge on the operation of the brown bin and kerbside redry recyclable collection services and provide advise to householders on same as required
7. As appropriate help resolve complaints/service requests from the public regarding waste collection and report to the Supervisor any issues that cannot be directly resolved
8. Work as part of a team to ensure the completion of allocated daily schedules
9. Where appropriate, deal directly with any matter reported by waste collection operatives in fulfilment of their duties, and in all other instances forward matters to the Supervisor for attention
10. Report all accidents to the Supervisor
11. Implement appropriate procedures to control and contain environmental impact of activities (including an immediate pollution control response), under the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
12. Ensure delivery to households, of waste educational and promotional material as required
13. Contribute to continuous improvement of all Council services by remaining observant at all times and reporting to the Supervisor any issues or observations of relevant to the efficient and effective delivery of Council's cleansing services eg incidents of illegally deposited waste, significant littering, overflowing or defective litter/dog litter bins
14. Maintain a positive image of the Council by ensuring that personal appearance and conduct is of a high standard at all times
15. Have due regard for personal health and safety, the safety of colleagues and general public, and observe all Council health and safety rules, regulations and procedures
16. Undertake any other relevant duties that may be required and are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post
Essential Criteria:
17. Valid DVTA Driver Qualification Card
18. Valid Digital Tachograph Card
19. 1 year's relevant experience in each of the following areas:
20. Driving Category C vehicles
21. Operating mechanical lifting equipment/hoist
22. Dealing with the public in a customer service capacity
23. Completing accurate records of scheduled and completed work
24. Excellent communication skills
25. Ability to work as part of a team
26. Ability to work on own initiative
27. Ability to provide excellent customer service
28. Health and Safety focused
29. Ability to follow clear instructions
30. Full current driving licence (valid in the UK) including entitlement to drive Category C vehicles (over 3500kg)
Desirable Criteria:
31. Experience in refuse collection and/or recycling centre duties
