Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior Sister who is enthusiastic about delivering outstanding care to patients referred to the Medical Day Unit that caters for 4 trolleys and 15 chairs. Referrals are from General Practitioners, Emergency Department, Same Day Emergency Care, inpatient speciality beds, with a focus on admission avoidance.

The post holder will have had experience at band 6/7 in managing a ward/department and its resources as well as experience in developing and managing projects for new service provision.

We support interventional radiology and haematology patients.

You will be supported by the Unit Lead, Matron and Medical Staff. You will be expected to work Monday to Friday within a variable rota ensuring nurse cover in an unpredictable environment.


Main duties of the job

* To provide high standards of evidence based patient care in the Medical Day Unit to adults who present to the department following referral via General Practitioners, Emergency Department, Same Day Emergency Care and specialist outpatient departments.
* Lead and develop the core nursing establishment with responsibility for delivering safe nursing care and people management.
* Represent the department at local and national forums when indicated.
* Ensure clinical incidents and risks are reported and investigated in line with policy whilst sharing the learning.
* Manage and reduce complaints and investigate risk.
* Manage sickness, annual leave and performance in accordance with Trust policy.
* Manage the E-roster and work within performance indicators.
* Be accountable for safe storage of medicine.
* Review monthly nursing establishment to ensure safe and competent levels are in place to meet service needs.
* Manage and work within the Unit budget whilst holding regular reviews with the Divisional Accountant

Essential criteria

* Registered Nurse
* Evidence of CPD
* Teaching/Mentorship Qualification
* Immediate Life Support. Cannulation. Venepuncture. Administration of Intravenous Medication


Desirable criteria

* Completed leadership course or willing to work towards


KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE


Essential criteria

* Significant post registration experience with recent acute Medical/Surgical/ED experience in an acute hospital setting
* Understanding of professional nursing issues


Desirable criteria

* Experience and evidence of developing a service/project


SKILLS & ABILITIES


Essential criteria

* Evidence of ability to practice as a proficient practitioner
* Evidence of ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, patients and visitors.

* Evidence of ability to develop leadership and management skills.

* Understanding of clinical governance and ability to assist in establishing systems.
