IKWRO – Women’s Rights Organisation (IKWRO) is an award-winning charity founded in 2002, originally as the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation. It provides vital support for women and girls from Middle Eastern, North African, and Afghan communities at risk of honour-based violence, child marriage, forced marriage, female genital mutilation, domestic violence, sexual violence, and other gender-based violence.
IKWRO offers direct services including advocacy and professional counselling. It opened the UK’s first specialist Middle Eastern women’s refuge and frequently shares expertise with government, academia, and media, as well as training professionals such as police, social workers, and educators.
IKWRO has played a leading role in recognizing honour-based abuse and honour killings as forms of violence against women and girls. Campaign achievements include the extradition of perpetrators of honour killings, criminalization of forced marriage, child marriage, virginity testing, and hymenoplasty, and the inspection of policing practices regarding honour-based violence.
The successful candidate will support Arabic-speaking women who have experienced forced marriage, female genital mutilation, and honour-based violence. Working confidentially, the counsellor will listen attentively, offering empathy and respect to help clients express their feelings, overcome issues, and make positive life changes.
The candidate must be accredited by BACP, UKCP, HCPC, or equivalent, or be in training to achieve such accreditation.
