Job overview
This position is a Phlebotomist (NHS AfC, Grade 2) based at Whiston & St Helens Hospitals. The role involves working 28‑hour or 24‑hour posts on a 7‑day service between 7 am and 8 pm, with flexibility for covering other sites within the Trust.
Key duties
* Ensure patient is positively identified.
* Collect venous samples safely following Phlebotomy Standard Operating Procedures.
* Collect blood samples at GP practices and other health‑care settings.
* Work across sites as required and cover sickness and annual leave.
* Adhere to Health & Safety procedures within the Trust.
* Deputise for a Senior Phlebotomist when necessary.
* Assist in data gathering for audit purposes.
* Support training when required.
* Ensure safe delivery of work to the laboratory.
Clinical & professional responsibilities
* Complete annual competency assessments for Venepuncture, ANT, and Transfusion training.
* Maintain up‑to‑date documentation relevant to the role.
Administrative responsibilities
* Ensure all paperwork is completed to a high standard and necessary requests are addressed.
* Record the number of patients seen and other basic information required by management.
Teaching & training responsibilities
* Support training initiatives within Phlebotomy as needed.
Financial responsibility
* Maintain appropriate stock levels in accordance with policy and procedure.
Research & audit
* Assist in data gathering for audit purposes within the department.
Qualifications
* GCSE level in English and Maths, or equivalent qualification or experience.
* NVQ level 2 in phlebotomy or willing to commence.
Knowledge & experience
* Ability to pass the phlebotomy competency assessment.
* Calm under pressure and able to put patients at ease.
* Team‑working skills.
* Full understanding of the role of a phlebotomist.
* Previous experience working with the general public one‑to‑one.
* Experience in a healthcare setting.
Skills
* Good interpersonal skills and flexibility of approach.
* Ability to work with minimal supervision and willing to learn new skills.
Other
* Ability to travel to various hospital locations by own car or assisted driver.
