Overview
This is a substantive full-time consultant post in the Plastic Surgery Department with a major interest in Microvascular Breast Reconstructive surgery. The Plastic Surgery Breast Reconstructive department is a regional service primarily covering Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Bristol to provide specialist Breast Cancer and Reconstructive surgical expertise. The post-holder will join the named consultants in delivering this service. The Breast Reconstruction team cross-covers each other’s patients. The successful candidate will have regular elective theatre and outpatient capacity, be part of the Oncoplastic Breast MDT and participate in the Plastic Surgery Service and On-Call rota.
Main duties of the job
The work of the Plastic Surgery Department covers a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions including skin cancer, hand surgery, lower limb trauma, breast reconstruction, head and neck malignancy, sarcoma, burns service and laser therapy. Combined clinics are held with other specialists. Specialist clinics include; hands, pigmented lesions, sarcoma and breast reconstruction. There are dedicated plastics and burns general anaesthetic operating theatres and three local anaesthetic theatres, with 24-hour access to general emergency theatres where out of hours trauma cases are undertaken. The postholders will be provided with secretarial support and office accommodation, shared with other consultants. There will be an on-call commitment to delivering an emergency adult and paediatric plastic surgery service and applicants must demonstrate high level clinical experience in general plastic surgery. The department serves a large region with dedicated emergency beds and ITU/HDU access.
Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
A formal job plan will be reviewed within three months of commencement. The plan is flexible and set in discussion with the Specialty Lead. The plan will be reviewed prospectively and will set out duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year.
Person specification
Qualifications (Essential)
* Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent (for non-UK applicants)
* Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
* Must have CCT in Plastic Surgery and be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of appointment.
Desirable
* Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or MS)
Experience (Essential)
* Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems or equivalent.
* Minimum of 10 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar or equivalent.
* Training in diagnosis and treatment of routine plastic surgery conditions.
* Specialist knowledge and training in microsurgical breast reconstruction
* Experience in surgical management of common, non-specialised conditions in children, including trauma
Desirable
* Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship or Breast Microsurgery Fellowship (UK or overseas) or equivalent.
Knowledge
* Evidence of recent CME/training progression; experience in audits; knowledge of NHS management issues; awareness of political context.
Skills
* Proven teaching ability; willingness to teach medical undergraduates & postgraduates.
Leadership and Teamwork
* Proven ability to build and maintain effective teams; positive attitude towards the wider healthcare team; good organisational and compassionate leadership skills; experience in development and change management.
Communication
