Axcis has a long-term role starting in September in Exeter, working in a small classroom of only 8 pupils. You will serve as a teaching assistant and behaviour mentor, supporting the social and emotional development of pupils with EHCPs. Most pupils have Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs, which can trigger challenging and aggressive behaviors due to traumatic experiences.
The academy is an Alternative Provision for children aged 11-16, mainly those excluded from mainstream schools or transferred for transition back or further education. The role involves working with secondary pupils, some of whom may have been involved in criminal activities or substance use.
You will work in a fast-paced environment, requiring focus, understanding, and empathy to de-escalate challenging situations. Responsibilities include working 1-1 or in small groups alongside the main class teacher and other TAs to provide mentorship.
Requirements include experience working with children with mental health needs. Team Teach or MAPA training is desirable but not essential. Opportunities for further training and development are available.
This is a full-time position, Monday to Thursday, with a half-day on Friday. Working hours are from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The pay rate is £90-£95 per day.
