Job overview

The Pathology departments at University Hospitals North Tees and Hartlepool (NTH) and South Tees Hospitals (STH) are working collaboratively to develop a joint service called Tees Valley Pathology (TVP) with services being delivered on all hospital sites.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent highly motivated Specialist Biomedical Scientist / Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly Histology team for 37.5 hours per week.

We are seeking applications from suitably qualified, enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists with appropriate experience to participate in the delivery of services provided by the Cellular Pathology department as part of the TVP service.

Candidates for the Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) roles should be HCPC state registered and hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Histopathology.

Depending on the level of qualifications and degree of experience from applications for the Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Band 6) posts, consideration will also be given to applicants who are newly qualified HCPC candidates and who may be working towards these qualifications and thus be applicable for employment at Registered Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) level.

Main duties of the job

* Perform routine day-to-day operations within the Cellular Pathology department, rotating between all sections within the specialty following approved methodologies and procedures.
* Assist in the training and development of Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory Assistants and other staff grades according to departmental policy; post holder will work autonomously without direct supervision.
* Participate in allocated work rota(s), carrying out laboratory techniques in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
* Perform maintenance procedures on highly complex equipment, requiring high levels of concentration and record all procedures undertaken.
* Prioritise own work so that timely and accurate results are produced to achieve a high standard of diagnostic work contributing to optimal patient care.
* Monitor quality control to ensure accurate results, taking appropriate remedial action and bringing issues to the attention of senior staff.
* Participate in the critical evaluation of new equipment and procedures, investigate poorly performing laboratory methods and report findings to the line manager.
* Maintain good stock control ensuring resources are used efficiently and order new stock in accordance with Trust Standing Financial Orders.
* Maintain an up-to-date knowledge base of methods in use within Histology and be aware of scientific and technological advances.
* Ensure all records, evaluations and data are recorded and maintained in compliance with standards set by accreditation providers.
* Process category A patient tissue samples and record associated clinical details as delegated by the consultant Histopathologist.


Person specification


Qualifications

* HCPC registration.
* IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Histopathology.
* DBS clearance (essential).


Experience

* Experience of using instrumentation and specialised techniques within the department/sections.
* Experience of Quality Management Systems and ISO15189 standards.
* Experience of working in an NHS laboratory.
* Experience with computer packages (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
* Evidence of continuous professional development.


Skills and attributes

* Ability to work unsupervised.
* Ability to stay calm and work under pressure.
* Knowledge of laboratory techniques and biomedical science.
* Able to communicate and maintain good relations with staff at all levels.
* Negotiation and problem-solving skills.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation and safety measures associated with hazardous chemicals and potentially infected tissue and body fluids.
