Tough Furniture are a leading UK manufacturer of furniture for challenging behaviour environments. Designing problem-solving furniture solely for this environment for over 30 years, we have built up a reputation for innovation, quality, and service. We are looking for an ambitious, motivated and hard-working Designer to join us as we continue through a period of growth and development - if this sounds like you, please keep reading. The Role A Designer at Tough Furniture will join a growing team as a crucial member of an evolving company, contributing to a fast-moving and purpose-driven business. This is a varied and rewarding role where you’ll be using your creative and technical skills to help us develop our standard product lines, as well as deliver bespoke furniture proposals for a variety of projects, ranging from new-build hospitals to SEN classrooms. These include the design and manufacture of specialist fitted bedrooms, kitchens, media walls, communal dining spaces as well as highly bespoke joinery installations. You’ll work closely with a core team of fellow designers, as well as collaborate with marketing, sales, production & installation teams to play a central role in shaping these furniture proposals. Responsibilities (including but not limited to): Produce a wide range of design outputs using both 2D & 3D CAD software. Take the product-lead on live furniture projects, from initial request and site visits through to production feasibility. Bridging commercial and manufacturing teams for successful outcomes. Be an instrumental part of new product development (NPD), including market analysis, understanding user needs, competitor awareness and trend spotting. Leading to structured product launches and the creation of technical documentation, training resources, installation guides and marketing material. Liaising with architects and main contractors throughout the design process to ensure the furniture proposal always exceed their expectations. Assist in preparing costing estimates for bespoke products and fitted furniture proposals, working closely with the sales team to ensure accuracy and feasibility. Collaborate with all project stakeholders to ensure design outputs prioritise the safety and wellbeing of end users. At Tough Furniture, attention to detail is paramount, especially in delivering high-quality, safe furniture for the mental health sector. The Ideal Candidate Exceptional attention to detail and will take pride in going the extra mile. Have a strong level of self-sufficiency, with the ability to manage deadlines, drive projects forward, and liaise professionally with internal and external stakeholders. A degree level qualification in product or furniture design (or equivalent) Proficient in 3D modelling using SolidWorks. Experience with AutoCAD for 2D design work A strong understanding of the principles of design-for-manufacture. Experience with the Adobe creative suite & KeyShot would be advantageous. Experience using and managing BIM Files. Organised and able to cope with a fast pace of work with multiple deadlines. Have a can-do attitude and a strong work ethic. Comfortable working within cross functional teams to meet business needs. Proficiency in using product management and project tracking tools. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
