The Post
The University is seeking an Assistant Financial Accountant – Treasury to support the effective management and reporting of its treasury activities. The role is responsible for accurate accounting, regulatory and policy compliance, and the maintenance of strong financial controls, while line managing operational finance staff to ensure efficient and high-quality transactional processing.
Reporting to the Financial Accountant, the postholder will oversee key treasury processes, balance sheet integrity, and compliance with accounting standards and treasury policies, contributing to cash management, loan and investment accounting, and high-quality financial reporting in support of the University’s long-term financial sustainability.
Description of Duties
Treasury Management and Cash Flow
* Take responsibility for the daily and medium term cash flow monitoring and forecasting, identifying risks and advising senior colleagues on liquidity requirements
* Support the management and accounting of the University’s loan portfolio, investments and other treasury arrangements
* Assist with the execution and accounting of treasury transactions in accordance with the Treasury Management Policy
Financial Accounting and Controls
* Prepare, review and maintain accurate treasury related accounting entries, including accruals, prepayments, and interest journals
* To ensure all treasury related balance sheet accounts are regularly reconciled, reviewing and signing off reconciliations ensuring any errors identified are promptly rectified and any issues are escalated appropriately
* Maintain strong internal controls over treasury activities and contribute to the ongoing development of treasury procedures
Financial Reporting
* Prepare treasury related disclosures and working appears for monthly management accounts and annual statutory financial statements
* Act as a key contact for treasury related queries during the year end audit and support the preparation of audit evidence
* Contribute to external returns, regulatory reporting, and internal reporting to senior management where required
Line Management and Leadership
* Line-manage the Accounts Payable and Banking team
* Provide guidance, training and technical support to staff, promoting a culture of high performance, continuous improvements and customer focused service
* Manage staffing issues in line with University HR policies, including absence management and appraisal processes
System and Process Improvement
* Use financial systems and Excel models to support treasury reporting, forecasting and analysis
* Identify and implement improvements to treasury processes, including automation, controls and documentation
Stakeholder Engagement
* To provide excellent customer service, manage and maintain good relationship with all internal and external stakeholders
* Engage in HE Sector networks such as BUFDG in order to keep abreast of the latest developments and ensure they are incorporated in our financial reporting processes
Essential Criteria
Skills, Attributes and Experience
* A part-qualified accountant studying towards a recognised professional accountancy qualification
* Thorough understanding of current UK accounting practices with the ability to interpret and apply them in practice
* Excellent Microsoft office especially Excel skills with the ability to manipulate and interrogate data proficiently
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a collegial way with colleagues
* The ability to convey complex financial information and concepts in a clear, easily understandable manner, including to non-financial colleagues
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present financial data clearly and concisely
* Ability to contribute to change and improvement, including contributing to cross functional projects and working groups

Fixed term for up to 19 months
