WHAT TO EXPECT This role will focus on the development and delivery of material modelling technologies, methods and toolsets including the research and deployment of new test data processing methods and CAE modelling methods as part of the Materials Engineering departments Materials Characterisation team at Gaydon. Main areas of responsibility are the development, delivery and validation of the departments material characterisation methodology and datasets (including test data analysis, CAE modelling methodology, validation correlation and reporting). This will cover the development of improved CAE methods, scripts for test data extraction and analysis, creating CAE material cards, and creating and running CAE correlation models, to deliver and extract the relevant data that Materials Engineering team and its customers require for CAE engineering tools such as LS-DYNA, ABAQUS and Optistruct. Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities • Support development of CAE material cards for a range of materials (Metals, Polymers, Foams, Elastomers, Adhesives) using engineering knowledge and experience combined with Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) techniques, to deliver robust material cards. • Run CAE analysis of correlation issues, summarise results and feedback conclusions to CAE customers. • Work with materials characterisation team to develop and deliver CAE material cards within defined deadlines and programme time constraints. • Utilise CAE modelling knowledge and awareness of manufacturing process effects on properties to ensure due consideration is given to manufacturing noises in developing the material modelling strategy. • Support projects and CAE teams including the feedback of results as required through design / project reviews. • Support and present at engineering reviews with key stakeholders: CAE customer teams, PAT teams, Programme teams. • Liaise with all internal CAE customers across our business as well as offshore operations where necessary. • Liaise with all Materials Engineering core teams, and material suppliers where necessary. WHAT YOU NEED • Working knowledge of structural CAE methodologies. • Working knowledge of manufacturing methods and their effects on material properties. • Working knowledge of “in service” environment effects on material properties. • Previous experience and background in solving complex technical ideas and challenges. • Previous experience of material modelling development using CAE to meet defined performance targets. • Previous experience of automotive engineering requirements. • Competent in the use of explicit and/or implicit software and associated pre and post processing packages • LS-DYNA • ABAQUS • Optistruct NonLinear Previous experience in proposing and delivering material characterisation changes to improve virtual engineering capability.
