Role description
To support a growing area of our business, Arcadis is looking for a Senior Consultant to join the Intelligent Buildings team, acting as technical design authority for the delivery of smart building consultancy services across strategy, design, construction, and operational phases. You will provide expert technical leadership in Intelligent Building systems. Collaborating closely with architects, engineers, programme teams and clients to design, specify and deliver integrated smart building solutions that enhance the efficiency, operation and experience of built assets. Your role will involve translating complex technical concepts into clear, actionable guidance for clients and stakeholders, while driving continuous improvement, innovation and thought leadership within Arcadis. You will be instrumental in shaping project approaches, developing technical requirements, evaluating vendor solutions, and embedding secure, interoperable technologies that align with client ambitions and industry standards.
Role accountabilities
* Lead technical design for Intelligent Building projects, ensuring all solutions are fit-for-purpose, scalable, and aligned with client requirements and use cases.
* Collaborate closely with architects, MEP engineers, IT/OT specialists, and contractors to integrate building systems across their lifecycle, from concept through commissioning to operation.
* Develop and review performance specifications for intelligent buildings systems to deliver measurable operational improvements, including for example but not limited to:
o Building Operating Systems (BOS)
o Fault Detection and Diagnostics (FDD) platforms
o Building Systems Analytics Platforms (BSAP)
o Building Connectivity Systems such as Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS)
o Energy Management Systems (EMS)
o Building Management Systems (BMS)
o Security and Access control systems
o Digital Twins
o Occupancy Monitoring solutions
o IoT Sensors
o End user systems and applications such as Mobile Apps.
* Conduct technical evaluations of proposals and vendor solutions, providing clear recommendations and risk assessments to support procurement and project delivery decisions.
* Undertake comparative assessments and technical options evaluation for different technology options (e.g. wired vs wireless, on-prem vs cloud).
* Provide technical input into the development of Digital strategies and Intelligent Building policies for clients, including best practice data structures & ontologies and design parameters for digital enablement.
* Provide expert advice on cyber security for operational technologies, including vulnerability assessments and compliance with standards such as IEC 62443.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging technologies, industry trends, and certification schemes (e.g., WiredScore, SmartScore, NABERS) to ensure Arcadis remains at the forefront of market innovation.
* Translate complex technical information into accessible language for non-technical stakeholders, fostering understanding and buy-in across client teams.
* Ensure all project deliverables meet Arcadis’ quality standards and contribute positively to the company’s reputation for excellence in sustainable and intelligent building solutions.
* Support business development activities through knowledge sharing, client engagement, and identifying new opportunities for Intelligent Building services.
* Mentor and grow the team by attracting, developing, and retaining high-performing consultants with commercial awareness and innovative mindsets.
Qualifications & Experience
* Degree qualified in a relevant discipline (preferably membership of an appropriate professional body such as IMechE, IET, CIBSE
* Demonstrable experience of providing high-value technical consulting services within Intelligent Buildings and/or Smart Building Technologies
* Technical consulting experience across design, construction and operational environments across a range of sectors.
* Competent in building network IT/OT architectures and protocols, operational systems integration, data infrastructure, user experience solutions and both on-premises and cloud-based applications.
* Understanding of converged network design, strategy and implementation considerations, alongside approaches to containerisation of OT in on-prem server / server-less technologies
* Knowledge of BMS design and integrations including Building Systems Analytics Packages.
* Demonstrable understanding of cybersecurity in the context of OT - particularly IEC 62443.
* Experience of undertaking technical assessments of existing assets for smart building readiness through surveys and evaluation of existing smart building technologies.
* Creative and imaginative, able to identify commercial opportunities and inspiring appropriate solutions across the entire lifecycle of buildings
* Operates with a clear client focus: able to build credibility quickly with team members and Clients alike whilst exercising sound commercial judgment
