Under the direction of the Technical Managers and with a primary focus on sound, communications, and technical IT infrastructure, the Senior Technician (Sound & Comms) will provide a full and professional technical support service to internal and external customers. This includes delivering exceptional production sound support for in-house and visiting productions, managing theatre network and IT infrastructure relevant to technical operations, and acting as a key liaison with internal teams and external creative partners.
The postholder will be responsible for show running, maintaining audio/visual and communications systems, programming and preparing sound equipment, attending production meetings and rehearsals, and supporting procurement and hire activities within production budgets. They will also take part in all technical duties on and off stage and may supervise technical teams or deputise for Technical Managers when needed.
Although the principal place of work will be Birmingham Hippodrome the role will require work off site for rehearsal and production support, and for preparation and configuration of equipment to be used on tour.
Here are some of the things we are looking for:
1. Strong understanding of sound engineering, signal flow, radio microphone systems, and comms technologies.
2. Experience with digital audio networks (e.g., Dante), show control software (e.g., Qlab), and IP-based communication systems.
3. Practical knowledge of IT infrastructure relevant to theatre systems, including switches, routers, VLANs, and networked AV.
4. Proficiency in preparing and configuring digital mixing desks, PA systems, and show control systems.
5. Demonstrable experience in managing technical sound and comms for live performance, including rehearsals and production weeks.
6. Proven ability to deliver and operate audio systems across large-scale or complex productions.
7. Previous experience coordinating or managing technical infrastructure for AV and audio systems in a performance setting.
