PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £55,000 - £65,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
JOB PURPOSE
As an Assistant Editor for Curation, you’ll be working as part of the team that manages the front pages of the BBC News website and app. You’ll work with all parts of BBC News to ensure that our global audiences are served the best and most important stories from across the BBC.
This is a six-month fixed-term contract working a Friday to Monday weekend shift.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
The BBC News front pages are the most important places for readers to find our journalism. This is a new weekend-focused role on the Curation team, where you’ll be working with a team of Senior Journalists, leading the curation of the page to determine the mix of stories that will be seen by millions of readers in the UK and around the world. This is a key role in a fast-paced newsroom, where you will collaborate with journalists and editors across the BBC to make a real impact on how we deliver a front page for a global audience.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
* Oversee curation of the news front pages at weekends, giving direction to Senior Journalists running the BBC News website and app front pages
* Use significant news judgement to ensure the selection of stories, headlines, images and videos serves a compelling product, while adapting quickly to breaking news
* Work closely with editors to create weekend curation plans, using audience data insights to inform discussions about promotion strategies
* Lead daily meetings with editorial teams across the BBC to identify curation priorities
* Workshop front-page headlines and images with editors and the picture desk
* Gather and interpret audience data to inform curation decisions and best practice
* Help guide the development of Senior Journalists on the curation team
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
* Excellent editorial judgement with significant experience working in curation to execute digital promotion plans in a fast-paced news environment
* Proven experience in covering the UK and international news agenda
* A strong understanding of weekend news consumption habits, and how to tailor front pages to better serve weekend audiences
* A sharp eye for accuracy, balance, context and tone while working in a fast-paced newsroom
* Experience of making decisions under pressure while swiftly rolling out a digital coverage plan
* Ability to work collaboratively within a team, and with a large newsroom with many stakeholders
* A track-record of using data to reach new audiences and drive habit
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
* Experience managing diverse, high-performance teams
* Experience working with product or technical teams
* Demonstrable experience of developing and honing newsroom workflows
