Locum Consultant in Geriatrics
An opportunity has arisen for a Locum consultant to join our enthusiastic and progressive Older Person's Unit (OPU). This full time post provides experience working on the OPU wards, with our MDT Acute Frailty providing rapid CGA for SDEC and new admissions, and the opportunity to work with Hospital at Home. Older People's services are well valued within the Trust, and we are developing our FSDEC provision and surgical liaison services, as well as developing a Frailty Strategy for the Trust.
Candidates must possess or be within 6 months of possessing CCT in Geriatric Medicine.
Main duties of the job
This post serves roles within our inpatient work and out of hours cover. The inpatient work is now arranged in blocks of 5 DCC running Monday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Friday, improving continuity and cross cover.
You will work jointly with colleagues to ensure all senior decision making for the patients is conducted on a daily basis. Opportunities exist to review job plans in order to maximise continuity, patient flow and job satisfaction.
You will support resident doctors on the wards, as well as skilled medical nurse practitioners (all are either prescribers or working towards this) who provide extra skills and continuity. We manage our junior medical staff across the OPU to ensure staffing is maintained sustainably, with training at the forefront.
Some of our posts provide sessions as part of the 'Frailty Flying Squad', as described above, provided as a 5-8pm session each weekday evening (frequency 1 in 10 pro-rata).
There is a daily ward round of new frailty admissions on the PTWR and throughout the day. This post does not have on call out of hours commitments.
Weekends are worked on a 1 in 8 (pro rata) basis with 2 consultants carrying out short or long day cover each day.
During working hours, all Consultants support a telephone Advice and Guidance service, run via 'Cinapsis', with capacity for delivering and recording information.
